Not to immediately nitpick the review I was most excited for, but it seems like a line or two about Gina got cut out in that last paragraph or so, when talking about who the Gnosia in the second episode turned out to be. And the original game hasn't been out for even half a decade yet, if I recall correctly... time truly is a terrifying thing.

Also, since the anime seems to be using different spellings to the original game, don't be surprised if you see a lot of people using different spellings for names like Gina/Jina, and Raqio/Racio. Translation is fun!

I'm so glad this series got picked up for review, it's probably the show I've been most excited to see since it was announced, so seeing the adaptation be so lavish is incredible.

As soon as the subject of world lines came up, my immediate presumption was that Gnosia are unbound from linear chronology, which is how a different person can be the culprit each time around. They can't stop Yuri from time looping, but they're aware it's happening and are hopping between world lines to stay ahead of detection.

So far so good, but I'm a little apprehensive about it's ability to maintain that for it's entire run. Especially if - as the review said - it's going to be nearly two dozen episodes. The nature of the story makes it seem like could be difficult to keep it fresh and interesting for any extended period of time.

Played through the game twice - once a few years back, once a couple of months ago when I learned the anime adaptation was happening - and I'm really loving this adaptation so far.

I don't understand the appeal here, if he can't die and the universe isn't consistent between loops then isn't this just random chance?

It's more that this is a feeling out process while Yuri's only just coming to understand the situation they're in. Within the game every character has their own logic and tells and patterns of behavior and figuring that stuff out is a key part of determining who the Gnosia is on a given loop. I imagine there'll be a lot more of that as Yuri becomes more conscious of what they're dealing with.

The "twist" in episode 2 is surely deeply obvious to any viewer who is aware the show is going to last more than a couple of episodes, and so it really undermined the mystery and tension which is pretty core to making the premise work. I hope they do better keeps things interestingly uncertain going forwards.

The twist was also explained in the PV. It felt like something that should've been approached in the first episode already, but at least I'm glad that in-universe the smart character goes "oh ok a time loop, that doesn't guarantee anything" instead of the main character stumbling into the realization

The thing about Werewolf (and other deception games like it) is that while it superficially seems like it's purely random, it's actually a very complex logic game underneath that. If you understand the rules that every character role plays by, as soon as there's a death (or any other role's ability is activated, in the case of no death), you have to start assembling a mental model of who could be what role based on everything that has happened, and then use those probabilities (or certainties) to decide what you should do to give your team the highest chance of success. That complexity is why a lot of murder mystery or time loop-based visual novels and games tend to appropriate those mechanics for their narratives.

It remains to be seen how well the Gnosia anime will capitalize on that--and there's more going in the story than just playing a game of Werewolf in Space--but so far it's pretty solid.

I actually also have to say that the voice actors are really nailing their roles. I had actually forgotten that the original game didn't have voice acting, but Setsu and Raqio in particular both sound exactly like I had imagined them.

I've been enjoying the anime a lot so far, but I'm hoping once it gets past the tutorial loops, it doesn't make it so obvious who the Gnosia is each time. I can understand it this time especially in ep 2, since that had the first instance of the Intuition ability letting you tell when people are lying. But if in future episodes, once the loops are running normally, they have the Gnosia characters hanging around looking extra suspicious that'll be kind of boring. You need hints, but not "here's a shot of the Gnosia looking at Yuri while grinning evilly" or something.

It'll also be interesting to see what they adapt. It's looking like they're going for a (main story) loop per episode, though spoiler[they seem to be combining loops 3 & 4 together based on the Stella scene, which only happens in loop 4 (and only if you play as a male).] Since there's going to be 21 episodes, I hope they include some of the random not plot related loops and endings.

The animation is so good though. Ep 1 had some amazing camera angles, and ep 2 was really funky with its scene transitions. I'm really enjoying how the animate it, and it's a great example of how you can make talking scenes interesting instead of just talking heads. I hope they can keep the quality up for the whole run.

Looking forward to ep 3 and Shigemichi (one of the best charas)

Welcome to Gnosia, where the rules are made up and the results don't matter

I too was frustrated by how the episode ended. While I have no doubt it will be at least partially explained in the next episode so it wouldn't be as egregious if you're binging the show. However, watching week to week I feel like this loop should have been the first part of an episode so we weren't left feeling like the results don't matter for a week.

The internal logic (or lack thereof) is making my brain bleed. I just don’t understand. The ship can tell that there are two Gnosia, but can’t tell if that number has gone down to one? That makes no sense. Those kind of rules are all well and good in an ACTUAL game, but not so much for a story. Yikes! I think imma drop this one.

There are two separate scans. The one after someone is frozen only says if there remains any Gnosia presence active without being able to put a specific number on it, while the one determining the exact number can only be done during warp and presumably includes scanning the pods. They're just functioning on different mechanics and presumably the ship can't be quickly refitted to more efficiently handle the task because it's just a ship made up of refugees with only a few days to spare.

Why can't they just pull somebody out of cryo if they know they're human?
