I generally prefer subs to dubs, but dubs are a lot easier to binge because you can do minor cleaning or bill paying or other life maintenance tasks while they're on, and this show came with a dub option as I recall.

Just got done binge watching season 1. I had forgotten how much of a wimp the MC is. I also like the dub of this show. I am looking forward to season 2, provided the quality is the same.

The second season starter is very charming, with the addition of pixie dragon Dora even more charming than the first season. Said dragon makes a fun addition to the group and is another glutton (and likely plenty strong too). Also present is the obscenely well animated cooking (with that catchy tune being back too) and Mukohda's familiars are still as overpowered as always.

Well, as far I'm concerned it's official: 2025 is the year that the Tuesday-is-anime-wasteland curse got decisively broken. Detectives These Days Are Crazy, Apocalypse Hotel, and Catch Me at the Ballpark were all among some of my favorite new shows this year, and now Campfire Cooking in Another World has returned without breaking stride.

I love it when a show I like picks up right where it left off as if its last episode was a week ago instead of a year or more.

It took me a few episodes to warm up to this show in its first season, but once I was on board, I never got tired of its fairly simple recipe. If I'm reading the signs right, our MC isn't just adding to his menagerie of monsters - he's about to add some more divine blessings to his arsenal. This is a slice of life beyond doubt, but there is a fun subplot where the narrator is on a very slow rise to being a competent adventurer in his own right.

Episode 13 (S02E01): My New Friend is Absurd
----------------------------------

Summary:

After fighting off wild Venom Tarantulas, Mukohda saves them as spoils, then decides to make gyoza for the group. The food attracts a Pixie Dragon, who tries some and eventually casts a spell to make himself Mudkohda's new familiar, much to the latter's chagrin. He decides to call the dragon Dora, and they proceed to Krehl, the City of Textiles, where they meet a Guild Master named Rodolfo. There, Mukohda discovers the value of the spiders for their silk, shells, and meat, which turns out to be very close to crab. Later, he prepares several crab-themed dishes to celebrate Dora's addition to the group. And as he falls asleep, later that night, he feels he forgot something.. which later turns out to be his offerings to the goddesses.

Comments:

Over two-and-a-half years since the end of S1, and upon its return, the show doesn't skip a beat. I gotta' hand it to the crew of this show for having such a call to excellence. The storytelling is as relaxed as it was, but filled with a sense of adventurous whimsy that just makes you wanna' keep going along with Mukohda and familiars for the ride.

Dora is actually pretty unique from a personality prospect. He's not as harsh as Fel or as cutesy as Sui, but a very good balance of the two. Ayumu Murase, who has crazy voice acting range does a great job in the character's debut. It'll be cool to see what kind of OP contributions he can make, or just the kind of chemistry he adds to the group dynamic.

I'm also surprised to see an elf in the key art and then a dwarf in this episode. The two races are a staple of the fantasy genre, so I would've expected them right off the bat. But I guess it's better late to see them than never. I am curious if the presence of more races might lead to more diverse guilds and/or transactions. If I learned anything from Dungeon Meshi, it's that you can build all kinds of ecosystems based on any little variation of something. I don't see this one going quite that in-depth in that respect, but I could definitely see it leading to variations of food and such. Like, I wouldn't have thought spiders = crab, so maybe the show will keep rolling with that theme.

Featured Foods:
- Gyoza
- Crab

So I'm gonna' try a new thing for S2. In addition to commenting my own personal experiences with the featured foods for each episode, I will scour YouTube and try to find really good videos for making said foods. I don't have the time to vet each video, but I'll try to find ones with the most views and just take a gamble that they're as good as the view count dictates. Later, I'll go back and retroactively edit the S1 reviews with recipe videos as well.

Anyway, let's talk gyoza. If you like Asian cuisine, then you've probably had some form of dumplings or potstickers. It's meat and/or veggies, maybe some seasoning, wrapped in dough and either steamed or fried, and possibly served with a side of sauce. I've really only had the Chinese and Japanese variety, and I love them both. I, probably like many, prefer them fried. But steamed can be great, too, depending on what else I'm eating with them.

I remember one Chinese place I went to that had soup dumplings, which were okay. I'm not too big on soup and dumplings at the same time and would rather sip a spoonful of soup, then take a bite out of a dumpling separately together (think Ratatouille where Remy eats the cheese and the fruit at the same time). I actually don't go out to eat that often, so potstickers are a rare thing for me.

There was one point in time where my girlfriend worked for a Chinese lady at her restaurant. The lady was from the Hunan province, and her parents were the cooks. They handmade all the potstickers every day for a few years, before they decided to close the place. But man, those were the best potstickers I've ever had. I would frequently have my gf order them in bulk, and we'd just pig out and watch anime, back then. Great times.

Here's a really great video (a little over 12 minutes) for making gyoza from scratch.

And then there's crab. I wish I could eat more seafood, but it's expensive to buy around here. I occasionally eat shrimp and just consider crab and lobster way out of my league, price-wise. The two or three times I did eat crab, I remember it being (obviously) very messy. Depending on the size of the crab, you might get a little or a lotta' meat. But man, if you get some good pieces and just dip it in butter sauce, *chef's kiss*.

I've also only had lobster, maybe two or three times in my life, as well. I remember it being very tender. And when my gf and I were visiting her father in New Hampshire, I had a lobster roll for the first time at the airport (I think in Boston), and that was pretty delicious. Not sure what it is about crustaceans and butter, but they sure do make a tasty combination!

Here's a short (1 minute) for Japanese crab and lobster rolls.

You know, seeing the tasty cooking scenes plus your posts @Tony might get me to become a tad more adventurous in the kitchen. Not too much though, given that I have almost started a fire while cooking twice.

Anyway, episode two introduced elf Elrand and he sure is a lot. His zeal regarding dragons is something else and given that he has been like that for a few hundred years means that it is hard to predict just how creepy/crazy he might become. The extra blessings are rather handy. Sui can now ''smith'' items and Fel and Dora have gotten a 50% boost while in combat. I wonder how the latter fights, given that he is fast and tiny I assume something like a living magic bullet style.

Yeah, I can't think of too many anime where the elves were the kind of remote, elegant immortals of Tolkien influence, almost vulcan-like in their repression of unrefined emotional displays. Frieren, maybe, at least a bit. But this character was extra even with that proviso.

I get that our MC is meek if not an outright coward - it's a well established part of his character and often good for a couple of laughs - but how cowardl(koff) meek do you have to be to be terrified of going into a dungeon when you have a forcefield that automatically pops up and protects you from serious injury and three powerful magic familiars backing you up?

Well, I guess he's been traumatized, and trauma isn't about logic.

BTW - I never would have given that blacksmith inheritance to someone else. Skills and spells are better than treasures IMHO. But seeing how the slime became a one monster metal shop, I would have been wrong.

Episode 2 was another fun episode IMHO.

I have to give kudos to the show for having every character be unique in their behavior or mannerisms, there is not a single cooky cutter mob to be found. Whether it is Mukoda and his familiars having fun, Elrand going nuts over dragons or the gods being selfish, they are all fun. The episode also went nuts with the cooking, there was lots of it and that dragon meat in particular made me crave some juicy steak. Up next is them (finally) entering a large dungeon, I suppose the new skill will keep Mukoda extra safe.

Was scrolling through Reddit this morning and discovered this cooking comparison list someone made for the show:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLdZ-gGWJmn6zszmWKjhO2VAJ13RSoIvW

MAPPA apparently had real people cook stuff, storyboarded the recordings of those, then animated the scenes. That's actually really awesome and a testament to the show's production value Very Happy.

Smurky - I'm pretty sure our boy already had ample protection. as mentioned, I might have some details wrong, but I do have distinct memories of Fenrir wrapping him up in a nigh indestructible magic force field at different points in season 1

But, it's kind of interesting, watching a cowardly non-combatant being pulled ass backwards into being a badass. I find it much more interesting than all of the isekai MC's who are OP from the first sneeze.

- Tony. Mappa has done a fairly wide variety of anime from what I can tell. From the likes of Yuri! On Ice! to Chainsaw Man to Kakeguri to Jujutsu Kaisen. But when they're animating they never just (kaff) go through the motions.

Well, the sum of Mukoda having a mithril sword, the perfect defense skill, a basically normal level blessing plus the usual barrier should keep him safe. I do hope he becomes a little less of a coward though and actually levels up a bit. He is an otherworlder so increasing his levels might give him more and improved skills to use. Otherwise it was fun to see Iron Will again and there were lots of monsters being vanquished.

Note to self - don't read this thread before going to the grocery store Wink

I liked seeing Iron Will again too. I'm not as annoyed by the MC's cowardice as I was at the beginning of season 1, but I do still wonder if I should be frustrated with him or sorry for him because with his temperament he could have a perfectly good slice of life as a chef if circumstances and a giant wolf weren't dragging him all over.
