This one seems to be vying for top dog in the "Banished by Some Dillhole Despite Being the Only Reason They Were Successful" competition this winter. It's a position where competent but increasingly generic anime have a harder and harder time generating any excitement, but I stuck with Scooped Up By an S-rank and Banished Court Magician, so I must have some affection left for the sub-genre.

Welp, some well worn tropes were indeed accounted for, and I do indeed still have some affection for this genre, just like I still have affection for the Fiance-dumped-at-a-court-ball-by-the-prince-after-accusations-of-bullying genre.
I was surprised by how good the animation was. I thought those scenes where Jack (okay, Orhen) was slicing through monster ranks and the various boogums were dissolving into digital dust were well done. The main character isn't annoying with the whining or the anger and doesn't seem like a saint either, which is a plus in my book. Less is more here. Instead of trying to manufacture emotion with dialogue like a lot of these types of anime do, this MC just seems like a quiet, determined, somewhat introverted guy who's a bit in shock, which serves the story. Instead of being burned out - which I sometimes have been by offerings from this genre - I felt like I was pulling on a comfortable old sock. That I got out of the dryer, not off the floor or the edge of a chair. I'm not an animal. Last edited by Edjwald on Wed Dec 31, 2025 4:57 pm; edited 1 time in total |

@Edjwald, I started reading the WN of this anime a few weeks ago with the same expectations as you have previously stated. It was quite a ways in before a plot twist changed everything up spoiler[Philly, Orun's replacement, is not what she appears to be]. I will not say any more because i don't know if the show will make it far enough into the source material to get to this. We will have to wait and see.

Welp, I didn't read your spoiler @Gisan Otaku, but I will take your word for it that something distinctly different than the status quo is in the works.
Because I'm on holiday and have a little more time than usual - don't get me wrong, I always waste time thinking about anime, but I have more of it to waste at the moment - I tried to think of how many of these kicked out of the party anime there have been and how many I've stuck with. - The original one about the guy who was kicked out and found a quiet life in the Countryside - Red, I believe, was great IMHO. Second season was good but had some pacing issues. - There was one about the strongest tank which I watched all the way through. Middling, but I don't regret watching it. - There was one about a healer who turned out to be the strongest that I dropped close to the finish. What a colossal waste of time. - The one about the unaware atelier I liked. - Scooped up by an S-rank Party barely passed. I finished it only because I'd already invested 9 or 10 episodes. Middling. - I dropped the one about a Red Magician who left his A-rank party. I tried man. I tried. - I liked the one about the Banished Court Magician. I'd call it upper middling. - I didn't watch the one about the chef who started a restaurant after the first episode. Ummmm....oh yeah, the Beast Tamer one. Lame. I know I watched it longer than I should have but I honestly can't remember much past the twin....elves, I think? Twin somethings. So I've watched 5 all the way through and dropped 4, so apparently I do have some standards. I think the odds of me sticking with this one are pretty good. |

... Kirito, is that you? This type of MC grow on trees. Anyway, first 10min were very cliche and pretty tough to watch, but rest of the episode was better, so to watchlist this goes.

Truth be told, I was wondering if maybe they're inside a video game world given the way the monsters were disappearing. But as to the Kirito reference...come on man! The sleeves of his black trench coat were rolled up! And the grey highlights clearly came from a gray interior lining, not grey trim! Huuuge difference |

Yes, the first episode is indeed another one of those and among them it is certainly not at the top of the list. That said, the animation is decent enough and maybe there will be some interesting hook later on (one can hope). If not it will be one more for the ever growing pile.

Nice, there's an honest attempt at character drama here that can be taken seriously. Appropriate soundtrack too. Now I'm just hoping the cliched comeuppance for the hero's party is somehow avoided/subverted, not really clear signs for that unfortunately. Otherwise, not too much movement forward here, other than introducing some of the people appearing in the OP.

Imma guessing that the reason the "Hero" kicked Orhen out is because the hero is crushing on that new party member/childhood friend that we saw this episode, and the hero was jealous because she seems to prefer Orhen.
Not a lot of action this episode, but I found it to be an easy, enjoyable watch myself. The only caveat there is that I find the younger sister's crush shtick annoying. |

I like that there are several people who realize how much Orhen brought to the hero party and that said party is screwed without him. Given his speedy chanting and unique spells there is no proper replacement out there. A regular enchanter just won't deliver the same results. Luna knows all that that which makes me wonder about the rest of the heroes, are they that deluded or is it indeed jealousy?

I appreciate the show taking the time to demonstrate why an enchanter is such an important role within a party. It entails a lot more than just simply slapping on a few buffs and calling it a day (employing tactics, keeping track of timing etc). The hero party is likely to experience how they function without Orhen next week and given the cliche I expect things to end up pretty badly for them. |

It may be a cliche, but I can't say that I want to see the Hero Party breeze through level 94 going "I knew we were right to get rid of that dead weight!" just to subvert expectations. I'll just be happy if the hero doesn't make some kind of demonic pact in order to get revenge for his perceived wrong.
I'm assuming that Orhen is going to maintain some kind of connection with the Silver Rabbits. Consultant? Occasional mercenary? The anime continues to be what I expect it to be, and I continue to be okay with that. |

If I'm being honest, the pacing feels really slow for these first three episodes, like all three episodes could have been condensed into one, maybe two, without losing anything. Probably something that wouldn't really be noticed if you were marathonning the show, however by the end of all three episodes so far I've been left thinking "that's it?"
It could also be a skewed expectation because I've enjoyed what I've watched so far, and I just wish there was more of it. |

For my tastes, it's not that the episodes need more action but that that the non-action scenes should provide more entertainment value than elaborating on Orhen's background with the Hero party.
It doesn't really affect my enjoyment that much, but it makes me ever rewatching the show less likely. Who wants to rewatch a show where thirty percent of the proceedings are repeating info about a concept you already know in order to add a little more info or background piecemeal? If they are going to keep feeding us these tidbits, they should make the scenes where they're doing so more active...like have them take place during a training session, or while two people are arguing, etc. But that's just my opinion. |
