Cheers for all the information, thanks to it even I can understand just how out of the norm the current situation is with episode 3. All kinds of rules seem to be getting broken and the whole war is becoming messier by the minute. The priest made an impression, I figured he would be strong but him being a mix between Genos and Chainsaw Man is a surprise. Gilgamesh I want to see in action soon given how (over)confident he is.

Episode 03: A Battle without Heroes
---------------------------------- Summary: Hansa battles Jester, revealing his body contains sanctified prosthetics made to kill the undead, but Jester manages to escape. Later, it is discovered that Snowfield's magical leyline has become active the moment Saber was summoned, suggesting that the Fake Holy Grail War is, in fact, a cover for a true Holy Grail War. ---------------------------------- Comments: So not only is this series a first for introducing a vampire, but now a cyborg and two Holy Grail Wars happening simultaneously within the same location, and all within the first four episodes? This is kinda' blowing my mind. That means, instead of seven Master-Servant pairings, we could have fourteen?! Each previous Holy Grail War nearly destroyed the small town of Fuyuki, so I guess you can start saying bye bye to Vegas, or even the whole state of Nevada, at his point. I don't care how many Yohra 2b nuns you have running around Men-in-Black-nueralizing people with spells to make them forget. There's no way they can cover this whole thing up and not have massive amounts of collateral damage explained away. Like, how would this even logistically work if contestants from one War fought in the other? Would there technically be two Holy Grails if one contestant won both? I guess with two Wars going, that would explain why there are ten light novels. I should probably not overthink this and just take what the story gives us. But man, if there are two wars to cover with fourteen contestants, a four-cour series is definitely achievable. And there's gonna' be a lot of casualties when all is said and done. Hansa is pretty cool. The reference I made to Hellsing in my Episode 02 review was ironically on-point. But instead of being a superhuman like Anderson, Hansa is, heh, a cyborg. I kinda' suspected he wasn't all-human from the first moment they showed him, with his arm being all clicky. To think he was this much cybernetic, though, really surprised me. It'll be interesting to see how he balances his "over-seeing" and "desire to kill a mother-effing vampire." I'm also curious to see any flashbacks talking about his circumstances and/or motivations. Although, I expect most of it to be left our imagination, since there are already so many other characters and plot points to cover. Also, I'm sure it goes without saying just how insanely great the animation is in this. While it's sad we'll probably only get 12 or 13 episodes at a time, then have to wait a year or two for subsequent season, as long as the quality stays this high, I am totally okay with it. Hopefully, the last light novel will be done in the near future, and all that source material can just be adapted. The second Archer at the end threw me for a loop. And, then you have whatever Servant class that was summoned amongst all those puppets. I guess when all the True Master-Servant pairs are revealed, we'll have to make another sheet to keep track of them, as well. Culling Game complexity, ever-adventerous Frieren, the continuing intrigue of Hell's Paradise, the explosion-filled revenge conspiracy of Sentenced to Be a Hero, the double Holy Grail war of this show, and several promising rom-coms and isekai. What a season of anime. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: Last edited by Tony K. on Sat Jan 31, 2026 5:15 am; edited 2 times in total |

I had the same thought you did, Tony K.: 14 servants and 14 Masters??? That seems crazy, so I'm going to need to see more evidence that that will actually be the case. Hell, there's still plenty we don't know about the 7/7 in the Fake Holy Grail War never mind adding more characters to the mix. Interesting idea, though.

Fate/Apocrypha had 14 master/servant pairs. However it was a team match: 7 on 7 and they were competing for a single Grail. It had some great characters on both sides IMO. Also, Fate/Apocrypha was the only other Fate show where Jack the Ripper has appeared as a servant, although with a somewhat similar but ultimately different interpretation than in this show. It is only streamed on Netflix, although Aniplex did release the series on Blu-ray. Both shows also have a Caster who was a writer, although in the show, Caster's past identity has not been revealed yet. Also in this show, the Fake Grail war was only supposed to have 6 servants: no Saber, which is why the organizers were surprised when a Saber servant appeared. |

Yeah, I will be surprised if that city is still standing by the end of the war. That battle transformed the whole area and none of them fought with their full abilities. I do wonder about the illusion using one though, unless you can see through them that seems rather hard to deal with. |

After trying to re-read some information, but also not accidentally spoil anything at the same time, I can confirm this. The Fake War initially had 6 servants with no Saber, but the accidental appearance of Saber was the sign of True War being activated simultaneously, and thus we'll get 6 more servants for the latter, making it a total of 13. ---------------------------------- Original discussion started here. ---------------------------------- Episode 04: The Canon of Demigods ---------------------------------- Summary: Caster remarks that in order to create a true Holy Grail in the United States, Faldeus had planted a piece of the Fuyuki Holy Grail in Snowfield, summoning six "false" Servants to serve as primers for seven "true" ones. Meanwhile, Gilgamesh blocks an arrow fired by True Archer, then proceeds to battle him. Later, True Rider joins the fight, when True Caster interrupts them with an illusion spell. True Archer then reveals his name as Alcides, with True Rider, likewise, identifying herself as Hippolyta. Elsewhere, Saber reveals his name to Ayaka as Richard the Lionheart. ---------------------------------- Comments: Lots of new characters introduced in this episode. Of particular interest is Alcides, who is also known as Heracles/Hercules. I've only ever know the legend by the latter and had to do additional research to find out that Alcides is his human birth name. Slight spoiler in reference to stay night and the Fuyuki HGW spoiler[ Heracles was actually summoned as Berserker in that war. But as I mentioned he's going by Alcides for this iteration of the heroic spirit, I'm curious as how it works when he separates his human and god side? Like, are they different people, since they also apparently turn into different Servant classes?] Anyway, while researching Hippolyta, I also discovered that she and Heracles have a history. Although, there seem to be various stories where they got together, betrayed one another, or some combination of the two. Regardless, this iteration of Hippolyta obviously doesn't like him, which is just more fuel to the fire. It'd be cool to eventually see a short flashback showing what happened to between them. Also, it's a little ironic that both of them use bows. True Caster seems to be some sort of illusionist, which can be pretty dangerous, depending on how that skill is used. If you break it down, just seeing something can distort and completely flip one's reality around. Then again, I'm not sure if Alcides is blindfolded or if that's just a cover for his face, so I guess we'll see what the extent of that magic does. And then you have Richard the Lionheart. Most of my exposure to King Richard lore is through stories and depictions of the Crusades. He's not big on my medieval radar like Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, but I do get a general sense of "commanding" when I think about the character. I do like the way Saber is representing him, though. Like mentioned in an earlier comment, this Saber is way more transparent and less formal than previous iterations of the Servant. I mean, he even learned how to play the guitar and likes rock music! How cool is that? ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: Last edited by Tony K. on Mon Feb 09, 2026 6:45 pm; edited 4 times in total |

They sure are letting anyone join the Holy Grail War. The vampire was already someone you do not want to have entering but the mafia guy might be even worse. Who knows what he might wish for if he wins. Sigma on the other hand is even more out of the norm than the others in that he is becoming a servant himself? The girl at the end has a rather creepy seeming servant and Francesca I do not even know what to make off. Chaotic fun ahead. |

So do I have this right...
There are 6 Fake Masters and 6 Fake Servants There will be 7 Real Masters and 7 Real Servants One of the Fake Masters doesn't think she's a Master. One of the Fake(?) Servants started out with one True Name and then switched to another. There's a new type of Servants: A Watcher. The Watcher's Master is supposed to become a Servant: Lancer. Whew, that's a lot! |

My original plan was to create/update an ongoing list of all the Master/Servants pairings as they're introduced in each episode, like we've been doing. I was just super-busy this past week trying to work from home (the area got iced-in from winter storms), being a groomsman at my friend's wedding while helping our disabled friend (also a groomsman) to and from the wedding events (rehearsal dinner on Friday, wedding on Saturday, and I live half an hour's drive away from him), trying to review other shows, speed-watching and keeping up with the 43 titles I'm watching this season, and still speed-watching one movie a day.
I need to manage my time better and just take screen caps, then edit the actual review stuff, later. I have to keep in mind that screen caps tell a lot of the story and that most people will already have seen the episode itself, anyway, by the time I post something. The summary and comments are just icing on the cake. |

I think Saber is part of the 7 "real" pairs - the fake 6 were not supposed to include a Saber -, but he got stuck with Ayaka when he was actually summoned by someone else |

Thank you for the clarification! I really need a guidebook for this show.

Pretty much right. There are 6 "Fake" servants and masters, because there is no Fake Saber. Technically speaking, Ayaka is not Saber's master either, but for the purposes of the setting and narrative, she functionally can be treated as such anyway. When El-Melloi talks about using the Fake HGW as a catalyst to start a real HGW, it basically implies there should be 7 "True" servants and masters, but from the True set, the Lancer is missing and instead the Watcher claims the person who should've been the True Lancer's master will become the True Lancer himself. |

Original discussion started here.
---------------------------------- Episode 05: Stars' Banquet ---------------------------------- Summary: In various flashbacks: Francesca and Faldeus recruited an unnamed child who summons an invisible and intangible flying whale creature that communicates with Shadows of historical figures, proclaiming the Servant as Watcher and that the soldier himself will become True Lancer after a series of "trials." Meanwhile, mob boss Bazdilot Cordelion summoned Heracles as True Archer. And in the present, Tsubaki, via a dream world, asks her Servant Mr. Black to stop the people from leaving, as a disease spreads to the local wildlife in reality. Later, the soldier is attacked by False Assassin, but then defended by Saber. ---------------------------------- Comments: Interesting that Sigma will become Lancer, that's a very stay night reference. And that's also a lot of Shadows. I wonder just how many there are. At some point, I might have to add their names to the Master/Servant list. Being a child soldier without any real ambition, I feel the trials won't be too hard, unless they involve something non-soldier-y like emotions and desires. The one and only Lancer I know from previous two HGWs was pretty badass, and I doubt Sigma will just stay as a kid. So maybe his transformation to Lancer will be some alternative version of himself, like how True Caster (Francois) is the past version of Francesca? Anyway, Bazdilot the mafia boss seems pretty intense. The 20K+ body count for his philosophers stones/magic crystals might make him just as dangerous as Jester. Something about Bazdilot's eyes seemed off, which makes me wonder if the magic crystals were just for summoning True Archer, of if they also give him some superhuman abilities. He doesn't seem like the magic-y type, but I wouldn't put it past me if he were some kind John Wick on magical steroids guy. Tsubaki's dreamworld trip with False Rider seems to be the biggest threat, right now. Her comatose state combined with the desire to keep everyone around her doesn't bode well for reality. It essentially feels like the plague is transferring the souls/spirits of everything it touches into said dreamworld, giving Tsubaki some semblance of hope, when there's apparently not much that can be done for her. It's pretty sad that her existence has come to that. But I do wonder what if she and her Servant's abilities will be any different, should she actually wake up. Flat and Jack the Ripper seem like they might eventually become a kind of wild card. Flat's underplayed, but seemingly overpowered mage abilities combined with the mysterious nature of Jack and his ability to blend in anywhere give them a cool kind of stealth mechanic. I think that'll be very beneficial for information gathering. Although, I do have to keep in mind that Jack is also Berserk. The last two Berserkers in the previous HGCs were pretty tough, which surprises me that the title was given to a serial killer spirit, of all people. The save by Saber was cool. I wonder how that battle with False Assassin might go. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: Last edited by Tony K. on Wed Feb 11, 2026 2:49 pm; edited 3 times in total |

Yeesh. I tried making a list of all the Fake and True HGW Masters/Servants, but it feels a bit messy in the formatting. At this point, I'm just gonna' have to copy and paste it each episode, then update it, as more names/identities are revealed. Of course, the list will be up-to-date based only on that episode. But I'm also considering just keeping the most recent list for the most recent episode, so as to reduce the amount of text clutter per page.
