I think the first episode should come with a warning that you need to have quite a few drinks or a bit of certain other substances in you before watching. I did not have any of those things and thus the episode just made me question what I am spending part of my life on. It is not bad... I think, but not for me.

It made me think back to Serial Experiments Lain and that was also not something I could enjoy.

Is this an adaption of that one streamer game from a few years back, which went a bit viral? It wasn't something I played myself or watched a full playthrough, but my understanding was that the premise was gameplay acting as a manager or producer for a streamer, managing her mental health while she clearly has mental health problems. I actually thought most of the game was set up talking to her over the internet with her being needy. But the first episode had a lot going on.

At the very least I think that it is supposed to be a kind of unreliable narrator thing, so I am not sure what parts are supposed to be plot vs stuff just in her head. The subtitles kept having her refer to herself with "we", which has me wondering if it's something like people in her head. If she did dress up gothic Lolita in high school or it was something like an alter.

Parts of it definitely felt like a Lain pastiche.

In character and plot terms, I didn't care about anything and can't see how I would. Which isn't good.

In terms of what it has to say, eh. I have no interest in the media its discussing, and I dislike the tendency to universalise its appeal (yeah, streamers are relatively popular with the youth, but its nothing like universal; and that applies as much to the critics, of course) and treat a phenomenon as totally novel (theres really a lot in common with past parasocial relations around popstars, ect, though obviously the instant nature of mediums changes a lot as well).

Well, it could perhaps turn out to be an interesting show but its probably not for me either way.

I like pretentious oververbosity. The format its going for is, despite not the best aesthetics, is one I am basically very open to.

But there has to be some level of interest underlying it, and after 40 minutes the show hasn't convinced me theres anything there except talking about vtubers, which I don't care about in the least in and of themselves. Thats fine; the shows not made for me- I will exit stage left.

Episode 3

Suffering porn.

The previous two episodes have felt like scene setting, with the series really kicking off with this third episode going deep into Ame’s past. It’s a little like Lain meets the world behind Shiboyugi. Plus: a content warning of the “this is a work of fiction, resemblances to persons, companies, places or things is purely coincidental” variety. (They could have used one for suicidal ideation.)

It would be easy to see Ame seeking release in one of Shiboyugi’s death-games.

I thought there was an interesting use of cropping — a blend of old-TV frame ratio (with bars to the left and right) and modern screen frame ratio. Mostly scenes from Ame’s past were old-frame ratio, with new frame-ratio preserved for, maybe Ame’s delusions?
