Damn, I took a look at the language script and...
You either have an incredibly bastardized localization in English that changes a ton of things and completely removes several references (though somewhat intelligible overall), or you have a translation seemingly done by AI and then double-checked, which catches some of those references and gets somewhat cleaned up (at least from the languages I actually speak, those being -aside EN and JP- Portuguese, Spanish and Italian). It's generally unpolished, hyperliteral to a fault even when it tries to play around with the meaning and syntax, and at times less intelligible than the aforementioned English one. The entire thing fall in either of these two categories and both are different flavors of bad. To be fair, this isn't exactly an easy game to translate, it has a lot of old school Japanese otaku culture shout-outs from the 00s, in the source Japanese text. It's outdated by nature, somewhat on purpose from what I could see. The localization in English inserted a ton of modern slang that at times has zero to do with several of the ones used in this game, so in a way, you could say it did its job alright in that specific regard. What is far more questionable is how much Twitter culture war brainrot they inserted in there as "slop posting" that has virtually nothing to do with the sort of "sh*tpost" the Denpa agent of this story is spreading around originally. For an egregious example, for every "good" localization choice, such as: 【ゆんゆん】だから、Qちゃんはたっくさん電波を受信して、こころをドキドキさせるゆん! 【Qちゃん】電波で……こころを……ドキドキ……?ンー。電波ソングとか、カナ? 【Yunyun】Qtie, receive ALL the signals I transmit and let your kokoro go dokidoki! 【Qtie】Dokidoki? From signals?Hmm. Like with denpa songs? Which despite being in the right spirit, is not the ideal way to localize this in a way that is actually comprehensible enough without the need for TL notes (which, as a translator myself, nowadays seems to be utterly hated by localizers with a passion; even when there's a perfectly reasonable context to use them for, really), not to mention, going a bit overboard with the weebery (this is quite the lesser example by the way). But anyway, for every good choice, you also have whatever this is: おじさん構文…… australian english... (perhaps "boomer speech" would be better for what they wrote before this) スーパーハカーの仕業 someone hire that mr robo guy lol (an otaku-centered game outright removing a well recognizable Steins;Gate reference and using Mr. Robot instead is very dumb, and I don't think they couldn't get away with copyright stuff either, it's as easily avoidable with using "Supah Hackah" instead of "Super Hacker" as it was for them to use "mr robo" instead of "Mr. Robot") 令呪で縛らないから i will NEVER be victimized under fascism again (a clear Fate / Stay Night reference about not binding people with a Command Seal turns into this) いらない i'd cut my uterus out if i cld (even something as simple as "i'll pass" would be perfectly fine here, context and all being considered) -------------------------------------- In conclusion, if you are not going to play this in Japanese, you would do better waiting for them to fix the translations/localizations. The developer seems to be well aware of this having happened at least in the English side of things, and issued a statement while linking a google forms submission for any sort of additional localization-related issues: https://steamcommunity.com/games/2914150/announcements/detail/502856256328827731 |

Apparently the localization was done by the infamous Jeremy Blaustein who was known for ruining the original MGS's English translation so much Hideo Kojima disowned it and parted ways with him.
Yeah, the game looked cute but the localization looked like absolute garbage. I'm glad fans were able to speak out and get it changed at least which is a good gesture that seems rare these days rather than just dismissing the complaints like other companies would do so I'll pick it up to show my support for that decision in an era where so many companies are complicit in bad localization. |

The really unfortunate thing about all this is every other language has a competent translation but once again it's only the English translation that felt the need to change everything. I hope the game gets a proper translation.

While there are indeed issues with the english localization with the gutting of anime related references and some other questionable changes, its absolutely exhausting how the discussion of this incident has been taken over by bigots trying to co-opt it for their own agenda turning it into some culture war nonsense on obvious sites.
The game itself is fun, the translation highly questionable, but gods if the well of discussion around it hasn't been turned utterly toxic at this point in time, its so damn tiring. |
