I’m doing something new this time – the anime titles listed below are also links to their trailers if anyone wants to check them out. Otherwise, same as per uze, I’m organizing these by days, then dates since that’s how I fill out my anime calendar. Unless mentioned, the anime are premiering on Crunchyroll.

Keep in mind, Crunchyroll has a whopping 12 To Be Announced anime waiting in the wings, and dates sometimes get changed at the last minute. I will try to update.

Between returning shows and new ones it is going to be one heck of a season. No joke, a disgusting amount of anime for one season. Speaking of disgusting, having read a bit of the Yani Neko manga.... it makes Iori and Kouhei from Grand Blue seem like respectable adults.
Tanya being back is grand, I will have to binge the first season next week (plus the movie). Bleach is finally ending and Black Torch is a surprising anime in that the source material got the axe long ago. Besides that I wonder how Clevatess II will be with the magic school focus and boy is there a lot of fantasy coming next season.

Thus ends my ramble, cheers for the list Edjwald.

Yah, I don't recall ever seeing a season with this many holdovers from the previous season,

Ascendance of a Bookworm, Daemons of the Shadow Realms, Welcome to Demon School, That Time I Reincarnated as a Slime, Mao, Fist of the North Star, Mission Yokazura Family, Classroom of the Black Cat and the Witch...

and then there's a shotgun blast of sequel seasons too.

I've been seeing a lot of headlines about the decline of the isekai genre while signing on to ANN, and it's definitely true that we no longer see at least five new isekai factory floor isekai dropping off the conveyor belt every season. To say that the genre is almost dead seems a bit of a stretch though, given the abundance of isekai still in circulation.

This season had Re:Zero, Ascendance of a Bookworm, That Time I Reincarnated as a Slime, and Reborn as a Vending Machine coming back, for example. And the one about Strongest Job Being an Appraiser was more than just a cheap knock off.

None of this even accounting for Villainess anime being a sub-genre.

This season, it looks like there's another surge of returning isekai while three of this season's are going into double courses. I would argue that Saga of Tanya the Evil is the highlight, the one about the Skeleton knight in another world is the bog standard, and most fall in a middle ground like Trapped in a Dating Sim.

The new shows have at least four isekai set-ups that I spotted. The one about going from overshadowed to overpowered looks like the usual trope ridden cliche, but we'll see.

Busy season indeed. Setting aside any continuing shows like MAO and Daemons of the Shadow Realm, there are 28 new titles I want to sample and 4 sequels. Spring was a lean season for me with only 6 titles, but the pattern lately is a light season followed by a heavy season, so we'll see. At least this time I'll be in town for the roll-out.

@Blood - this does look like a good season in the works.

As to the returning and/or sequel shows, I've already got a lot of energy invested in Shadows of the Daemon Realm (I'm watching the dubbed version 2 weeks behind everybody else) Grand Blue Dreaming 3, Saga of Tanya the Evil 2, and You and I Are Polar Opposites 2.

And there were lots of others that I liked from a lot to fine. Hellmode 2. Trapped in a Dating Sim 2. Magilumiere: Magical Girls Inc. 2. From Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman 2...

So, yeah, the season's got a solid foundation before the first episode airs.

Rather than name my pre-picks or highest hopes, I'm going to talk about the much maligned (often deservedly so) male protagonist fantasy adventure genre here for a second. The problem is, this genre has traditionally attracted lots of studios who just want to make something as cheaply as possible while still having a good chance of appearing on Crunchyroll's most popular column.

This season, there is another slew of...let's call it "economically produced" fantasy adventures that all have that factory floor look, and I will try them all hoping for some brainless relaxation, dumb fun, or sparks of originality. Campfire Cooking in Another World and Farming Life in Another World both have the same look and carefully budgeted animation for example, and I enjoyed them and others. But I wind up ditching most despite hoping for the best.

I'm not holding out too much hoping for the best as far as From Overshadowed to Overpowered (an isekai) and I Became a Legend After My 10 Year-Long Last Stand just based on the trailers. Have (over)power. Add water. Instant harem. The former looks like a xerox of that anime about the dude with the magic crest and the latter didn't even bother to try to make the trailer look good - still frames with CGI effects appearing to mimic action, etc.

The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System certainly has that distinctive Go Hands look - but the trailer was such a hot confused kinetic mess with little plot emphasis that I'm not holding out much hope.

The Insipid Prince's Furtive Power Grab For the Throne has some original plot points, but it looks like it could be another case where a smug OP protag solves everything with a bigger power hammer. Unless it's a parody or has a twist, I just don't have as much patience for that kind of thing anymore. I'm not sure I ever did come to think of it. But the magical Zorro type premise leaves room to surprise me.

I do hold out more hope for Villager of Level 999 which looks like it might have the kind of twist I was talking about, a dude who presumably got to level 999 swinging a hoe disrupting the usual hero vs demon lord dynamic. I'm not asking for the next Frieren here. I'd settle for the next Chillin in My 30's, an offbeat little anime with its own ideas inside the genre norms, a few feels, and a mild charm.

The World's Strongest Rearguard is sure to attract scorn and hatred from all corners. It's an old school isekai. It apparently has a system and a harem. I'll bet you anything there's an adventurer's guild and levels. And yet, for some reason I'm thinking this one might be a guilty pleasure. The dude doesn't seem OP in the typical anime sense, and the full title holds out some hope for a little world building. If nothing else, I can look forward to making lots of immature jokes using the word "rearguard."

And the one I have the highest hopes for hasn't gotten an official streaming platform yet, but I'm reasonably confident Crunchyroll will pick it up. The Frontier Lord Begins With Zero Subjects looks like a territory building anime with an easygoing vibe similar to Farming Life in Another World, and I'm up for that.

Edited once to get some italicizing in order.

Yeah, I'm done even sampling those shows any more. I'm avoiding them and STILL have 28 new titles to try out. I suspect what will happen is I will do this for a while and then start to feel nostalgic for the genre at some point. We'll see.

Welp, I admit that the batting average isn't very inspiring. And I know that you can range from 3 anime a season to 34 depending on whether the wind is a nor' easter or blowing south westerly, and there's nothing wrong with that. There's no one right way to enjoy anime, especially if you disagree with me. Wink

But I still kind of enjoy the sifting process, and, for me anyway, every season has had at least one or two seemingly generic fantasy anime with moderate production values and modest ambitions that I've enjoyed enough to make casting my net around worthwhile. The seasons blur a bit, but I think in the last three seasons Kunon the Sorceror Can See, The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princesses, Let These Grieving Souls Retire, There Was a Cute Girl in the Hero's Party, and Hellmode were all examples.

And that's not even counting sequel seasons or the ones that I really liked a lot if I start looking at all-timers.

I'd probably try a few out if I only had say, 10 new titles (including sequels) that I was up for. As I've said before, I'm past the stage of feeling the need to complete anything I start and I'm cool with digging, say, 4 episodes of something and then saying goodbye. But I find that I enjoy titles I like even more if I'm not weighed down by a bunch of so-so offerings. So it's not so much a rejection of them as it is a desire to keep myself hungry for things I REALLY dig.

@Edjwald, thank you very much for your hard work. As has been stated, this appears to be a crowded upcoming summer season. Your brief descriptions and the links to the previews were very helpful to me in determining which shows I want to watch and which shows I might only give it a try then decide to keep watching, or drop. Very Happy

Yes, thank you, Edjwald for this thread and the series discussion threads. I would have helped out but I've been sick as a dog since last Tuesday and still feel pretty crap. That's my excuse for this season and I have 12 weeks to come up with a new one for the Fall! Anyway, you're such a mensch doing this that I almost feel bad hatching all these plots to ruin your life... almost.

I haven't really looked at any of the new upcoming shows yet since I'm still focused on finishing the current season. However, I do know what sequels and spring carryovers i'm going to watch.

9 from spring, 15 summer sequels. might be 14 depending on when toonami gets the last part of Bleach

Yup, plenty to watch. I am thankful that there is a bit of a break week this time. I am going to go wild during it to binge/finish some older anime. I would prefer to get a calm season again sometime in the future but that seems impossible. Given that they are even adapting Black Torch which was an axed manga they will scrape the barrel if needed to adapt more.

@Blood I look forward to seeing if the summer season will be a calm or busy one for you.
