It's probably safe to say that many anime fans have gotten their first exposure to anime via television and have developed a simple appreciation of Japanese animation from there. But how and when did your interest start to accelerate beyond simply being a casual viewer?
When I was in high school several years back, I was fortunate to have met people who were much more dedicated to the stuff than I was. They often talked about shows that I had no idea existed, and they were kind enough to let me borrow their DVDs to try them out. Needless to say, my viewings went beyond a lot of the stuff that was shown on Toonami, and I soon developed an interest in following more titles. That also led me to discover the anime community on the Internet, where I would often lurk through anime message boards to find out more information about various shows I haven't even heard of (which accelerated my interest in anime even more). |

By learning there were a lot of fans in my area. In high school, all I had to do was mention that I liked reading Fruits Basket and watching Digimon, and I had heard of this thing called .hack, but wasn't crazy about it, and people went NUTS.
I got exposed to every Shonen Jump show, lots of odd stuff like Onegai Teacher, and dozens of manga titles. I only own two manga series, but I've read dozens. 
Somewhere along the line I decided some of these people were nuts, but you know what? I really did love anime. From there, I pursued my own tastes and now I have a few friends that like the same stuff I like, but it's not a criterion for a friendship or a way to fit in. It's just something I'm passionate about by myself. But yeah, it ACCELERATED when I hit high school. |

The thing that got me really into anime was Gunbuster about 8 years ago now. I had gone into a blockbuster one day and saw that they had an anime section so I looked at the 15 titles that they had, most of which was crap that wasn't worth watching but I saw Gunbuster there so I picked it up and was hocked on anime from then on.

My Sister married a Man with two Daughters, and they are BIG TIME Anime Fans. I bought them a few Box Sets for Christmas, naturally I HAD to see what they were watching. Since many of them are Sci-Fi (I am a "First-Generation" Trekker) I got interested! They are a Complement to my Sci-Fi Box Sets. DVDs are a wonderful thing, no Schedule to adhere to, No Commercials to endure and, after you are done viewing it YOU GET TO KEEP IT!

I've watched anime since the 80s but I didn't go all out with it until I started watching Inuyasha. It ended up being a week long marathon where I watched the entire series, barely eating or sleeping. I wanted to watch it to the end and get closure. HA! I just didn't understand at the time how futile it all was. Anyway, from there it was one big downward spiral. Now I rarely watch TV anymore.

Through Buried Treasures, manga, graphic novels and animation in general. Obviously I just needed to broaden my horizons and find some true gems to completely fall under the anime charm.

Typical "new gen" anime fan right here. I watched Naruto for a few episodes and then downloaded the other 220 episodes. If wanted to make myself seem more impressive in my time watching anime, I'd say I started with DBZ and Gundam Wing back in the mid to late 90's but I didn't really consider myself an actual anime fan until I went out of my way to intentionally watch programming from Japan.
And yes, I do buy lots of manga and anime DVDs so leave the "you aren't a fan if you don't contribute to the industry" comments to yourself. |

Sort of.
I watched a few various anime when I was younger like DBZ and Gundam Wing. When I was in grade 10 I think, Gundam SEED started airing on TV and I started watching it (because of Wing) and right around the same time my friend who was a big anime fan got me watching Inuyasha. At that point I learned what anime was and started borrowing my friend's DVDs. |

As far as I can remember, it was through Saturday Anime on the Sci-Fi channel.
Classic movies and OVAs such as Tenchi Muyo! In Love, Record of Lodoss War, Iria Zeiram, Roujin Z, Project A-ko. Then I went to my first Katsucon. The rest is history. |

Actually for me it was quite the opposite
My first exposure to anime was via television, and I hated it. I thought it was the silliest thing in the world. To me anime just looked like a way to market collectable card games to kids just as many of the american cartoons in the early 90's were more or less meant to sell action figures. It wasn't until I took the time to do some research into the different sub-genres that I was able to find some anime series' that broke my preconceived notions of what anime "is". As it turns out I ended up really enjoying the romantic comedies, the visual novel animes, and similar things which would never make it on television in the US. Once I realized I didn't hate anime, I did even more research and found even more titles to love. It just branched out from there, and now here I am watching Fullmetal Alchemist of all things, coming full circle to watching and enjoying one of those popular television animes that I originally thought were so silly. Well television helped...battle royale (the film) led to me getting the manga (my first ever series), which led to an explosive increase in purchasing manga. Every now and then I'd buy an anime DVD, but I considered it too expensive so I kept with the manga. My interest in manga led to less interest in games, as I found them too expensive- nine/ten volumes of manga for the price of one 360 game. This viewpoint continued into my eventual anime watching.
However I found my resistance cracking after I ended up watching a few episodes of evangelion and finding the manga just didn't compare to the experience. A cheap deal online allowed me to get all of Excel saga, which was the first series I completed. However it was discovering fans online...first here and then another forum that led to my explosive increase in anime viewing (at the detriment of manga reading). Nowadays as well as the enjoyment and discussion, I sometimes find myself "competing" with other forum members to not fall behind

Robotech/Macross made me interested in it as a kid... Evangelion made me start hiring a few shows like Akira, Ninja Scroll, Macross Plus.. but the one that got me into anime was the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs.. the RK tv series and first Slayers were my first fansubs back after watched the RK OVAs and Nadesico was my first series I bought on DVD.

Mine was a combination of different things that led me to love Anime. The first thing I remember was watching Anime on Saturday and Sunday morning when I was a little kid. At the time I had no clue what it was and though it was cool. Didn't really think about it for a while, then got more channels on cable and saw more Anime on Toonami and Adult Swim then it just went off for me.

I've always watched anime as a kid (cause most of the animation showed in local TV back then was anime, not to mention the other Japanese shows we had on air), but I didn't know it was anime until 6th grade. I had a classmate who was pretty hooked on it and once I found out that what I've been watching all that time was anime, I wanted to watch more. I think I was still a casual viewer then though, because I didn't have access to the internet (more like I didn't know how to use it then
). It's been like that until early last year.
I had a lot of free time, and my brother, who was watching R.O.D the TV then, told me all about it. Since then, I started watching anime again, more than ever, and I joined this forum  I learned more about anime because of ANN, and became able to talk more about it too (cause most of my friends aren't into anime). So I guess, that's how my anime interest "accelerate".

I ran out of DBZ tapes to get at the local rental place and begrugingly picked up The Slayers. I soon discovered it was a far better show, went out the next day, and opened rental accounts at a half a dozen video stores in the nearest 3 towns so I could see what other wonderful Japanese animation I'd been stupidly ignoring in favor of DBZ.
I am eternally grateful to my mother for putting up with me during my early fandom (she had to drive to all othse video stores!) |
