So I basically love Anime but I feel as if I'm out of the loop when it comes to my knowledge in the area of Anime. In my early teens I watched it on a daily basis and would finish any Anime I could get my poor hands on as soon as possible or even in a days sometimes. For a period around 16-17 (met my girlfriend) my Anime viewing days diminished to pretty much nil. Than I got back into Anime (still with girlfriend) around 18 and now I'm 22 (just turned) But I've always felt as if there was this circle I never got into.
I watch old school stuff like Patlabor, Macross, Nadia. Some newer stuff made after 2000 I watch now and there. But I just like the older stuff better so I try to watch stuff pre 1990. Now when I talk to fellow Anime fans or read the news at Anime websites like ANN.com I don't know whats going on. Whenever they talk about some new show, voice actor, director, or studio I don't know any of them. And when I think about it I never really knew much when it came to the technical aspects of Anime. My questions is do people actually watch and read all the latest Anime+Manga? Know all the new Anime, directors, voice actors, and studios? Or do you just read information about it? I spent most of my money earned as a teen blowing it away on Anime DVD's. Spent my first $500 bucks on bootleg dvd's off ebay. I was young and thought it was all the same, now I know better. Luckily pawn shops still buy bootlegs :p |

Mostly the latter in my case. I don't tangle myself up in very recent shows if I don't yet know if or when they'll be licensed where I live, and I have to be picky with what I choose to look into for financial reasons. I'll have "heard of" quite a few things made in the last couple of years by looking at what's being talked about around here, but I'm probably not going to get around to watching many of them. You sound like you have far more experience than me, and your pre-90s preference probably entails insight into the industry just as deep if not deeper than many of us who are mostly familiar with post-2000 titles. I wouldn't worry about loops and whatnot. If you think you're missing out on something you probably know how to research into potential gems already. |

I usually follow a number of currently airing series yeah. Right now it's 7 as well as 3 OVA series and 2 movie series which come out more sporatically. I don't read a lot of manga at all though, and then usually just a supliment to an anime I've seen. As for the secondary question about knowledge of studios and such, I do retain plenty of that, but it's due to this website being such a wonderful source of information on those types of subjects.

Well. Although i like watching alot of ongoing anime, i dont really read manga (cept for bleach and naruto). I dont know or care about voice actors, directors, studios(except for kyoto animatioN). And i dont bother researching upcoming anime, except for sequels (like clannad afterstory) |

I do look up information about various new shows as the fansubs come out and I read ANN daily so I retain a pretty large library of information on R1 VAs, some Japanese VAs and a few directors but I don't know too much about the people behind the anime besides what's featured or what comes out. I do dig around in the older stuff, I'm buying the Patlabor box sets for instance and so I learn about directors and stuff that way but for the most part it's about the series/OVA/film at hand. Btw, it helps immensely if you have friends who share your interest in anime.

Yeah, I'm seriously out of the loop as far as watching new stuff. Everything I watch is probably at least two years old, with VERY few exceptions, and 95% of it is licensed release. I have seen very few fansubs and I'm happy that I've seen very few fansubs because by the time a series rolls around to DVD I can both
A) Watch it in English, enabling me to be completely immersed and not reading the bottom of the screen or trying to draw on my spare knowledge of the Japanese language the whole time. B) Root out what's really good and what's really hype. I've dropped more series than I'd like to admit, but on the whole, I try to find the good in anything I view (because I'm overly critical by nature) and will stick with it for a while even if it turned out to be a waste of my time. I don't like to waste time. So I wait until a release has come out that I'm sure is worth 5-9 hours of time. So I stick to discussing slightly older fare on here. I know jack about what's circulating on fansubs, so I'm real out of the loop there. |

I pretty much just read what's on ANN and US-based retail sites. I don't feel any particular need to try and keep up with everything coming out of Japan, when I don't know if/when it'll even see the light of day here. Friends and threads here will bring up anything worth noting-in-case-of-liscense... and I can focus my energies on the US market, AKA the DVDs I'll actually buy and therefore want to know the most about. To be perfectly honest, I enjoy going backwards more than forwards- having 'joined' the fandom in the late 90s, there's a nice big chunk of stuff I missed the first time around. Since everyone's (understandably) focused on what's going on right now, looking up older stuff becomes a fufilling scavenger hunt- I was more giddy when my badgering of Amazon sellers located a subtitled Gaiarth vol. 3 tape than I was over any of the DVDs I ordered from the DD sale about the same time (All 28 of them.) I suppose the difference is in the thrill of 'the hunt', versus what can feel like simply choosing which bandwagon you want to hop on. |

I think it all depends on how you would like to climb up the ladder and get into your hobby or interests.
Its also a good thing that you realize what bootlegs are, because it really could decrease the value of your shelf. I afraid that I am similar to JesuOtaku, quite picky to the kind of anime I watch, which also apply to what I buy. Although, I do drop an anime title time to time at the last minute when I am sure that its not worth it, but I don't give away or sell the ones that I already bought. To me knowing many titles, directors, or studios, (just to state a few) is due to the amount of research that I put in to find animes that I would like watch next and in particular, look forward to if there are any new titles thats going to be release. I am living in the Philippines right now, and had my previous stay in America. I get imported titles from Japan or Hong Kong time and again and I still have my English dubbed anime. ANN is one of my sources in picking an ideal anime when it comes to updates, and with all seriousness, if you have enough knowledge in your interest, you don't have to be worried if you are in the loop or not. |

I'm currently following about 24 or so new shows and OAVs, trying to at least keep up with a third of the manga on this list regularly, and trying to go through at least one series on DVD each week (currently it is Human Crossing), and I have a really hard time keeping up. And I have a lot of free time to kill and no life... I even managed to read the third Full Metal Panic novel this weekend as well as going to see Wall-E. I used to complain about fansubbers being slow, now when a group is a couple weeks late I'm almost thankful. But I'll tell you, this has been a bit fun in terms of watching different anime, but I'll never follow this many shows again. And I can stop some of them now but I'm a bit of a completionist, so unless I really hate a show, I won't drop it until I finish it. That being said, people may seem like they watch and read all the latest stuff but they have to be somewhat picky, I know I usually am and will be again as soon as the summer series end. Some may like the new stuff but they will only watch things that appeal to them in one way or another, whether it be taste or peer acceptance. A few follow only the more popular shows so that they can take part in those discussions you say make you feel out of the loop. Others are a bit more strict and only start shows that appeal to their interests. People who love shows with a lot of violence aren't gonna be watching a lot of cute shows, people who like romantic shoujo series aren't likely to be aware of the latest story arc in the hot shounen jump action series, and big fans of the artsy stuff might not watch a whole lot of anything else. There are a few exceptions but all anime are not for everyone. So people's tastes differ, like yours do. You may be out of the loop as far as new anime, but it doesn't make you any less of an anime fan. If you like forum discussions you should start some topics on those older series you like and I think you'll be surprised that other people might be interested in them as well.
Can't say that I do. I'm a little knowledgeable about voice actors but that is just because I sometimes like to know a bit about the people behind some of my favorite voices. But as far as directors and studios, I'll admit when I see the same name a few times for different shows that I happen to like then a name or two might stick. But other than that, I don't have anywhere near the knowledge about anime or the makings than any of the contributors to the ANN encyclopedia, much less the great staff here.
I read the information when I'm curious or when I find something I want to look up, but that's about it. I don't read background and staff info just to know it. In the end, to sum up, in short.. I'm not a very knowledgeable guy at all but I like anime so I just keep watching. Sorry about the rambling post, I don't even know where I was going with it at the end there.. or the middle. I do that sometimes. |

I never understood people who watch like, every single currently airing anime. I only watch one or none per season...because I only watch anime that I'd actually buy on DVD when it comes out, that I deeply enjoy, and not just because following fansubs is the thing to do. The last three shows I've actually followed were Gurren Lagann, Sketchbook ~Full Colors~, and Strike Witches...I've been lucky enough to actually pay for 2/3rds of them.

I personnally just stick to the oldies. I don't really try to keep up with current trends. I'm just getting a hold of the old stuff that I have missed over the years. Personnally, I don't like the animation of today's anime. Using computers to fill in characters and such, it's just not right.

It's called hardcore fandom, and the only way to get the lowly title of elite otaku is to eat sleep and breath the culture. It's a discipline.I've been doing this everyday since 1980.I can answer any question pertaining to anime and videogames. Fire away Naitron. Some of the best anime came from the 90's.Do you like English Dubbing or Subbed Anime?
I miss the hand drawn hand, hand painted anime of the past.Where they drew each frame of animation, not like now they morph, tweek, tween, color and convert. It lost it's edge. It's has also become too simple to obtain. |

As far as the R1 area is concerned, I stay pretty up to date with what's releasing, who's doing va work, what studio is acquiring what license, etc, etc.
I buy a lot of anime, even finishing up some series that I might not be crazy about (magikano, venus v virus, pumpkin scissors) after the first two discs. But as for the hot off the presses Japan release, I know what series are out, but I don't know much about them beyond the sales pitch blurbs. I don't watch fansubs (much) unless it's a series I plan on buying on it's R1 release. I'd keep up a little more with some of the legit streams/downloads of cr if they formatted right when I play them on my tv. |
