I'm really surprised how well the Japanese seem to be taking to the live-action Dororo, considering that last Astro Boy anime bombed. Does it have awful idols playing the characters or something...?

it has Kou Shibasaki (Battle Royale...) as Dororo, who is a professional and quite famous actress (later started singing as well).

I'm ok with her, but I just am surprised it's the current popular oldie from the guy, when Astro Boy's supposed to be the big one. Maybe it's a generational thing?

In Japan, yes. Especially with the sports that the Japanese are really good at, where they can and do medal. And it's a good thing they have medaled too.
