I'd buy the thinpacks to save shelf space but I've heard some of them have the extras stripped. Anyone know which ones? Should I just stick with the singles release?

I follow this rule:
If it says "Thinpak", it's stripped of extras. If it says "Complete Collection", it's in a stackpak brick with the extras included. example-The Chrno Crusade Thinpak is stripped of extras, but the Chrno Crusade Complete Collection has all the extras. Of course this isn't always true, but it works for the most part. I personally look up to see what kind of extras are being stripped. If the extras weren't all that enticing to begin with, I just get the thinpak. If it had really cool extras, though, I'd search for the artbox and singles. Also: I've heard that ex-ADV shows released by Funimation have the extras stripped, so keep an eye out for those too. |

With some of them that is the case. Example: Pani Poni Dash which doesn't have the EVER IMPORTANT AD-VID Notes which is not exactly Funi's fault for that, the AD-VID notes is ADV's property. But your best buy for any ADV product that has extras that are important, go with singles if possible. |

The Evangelion Platinum thinpack has all the extras taken out. The tin and the Holiday complete release has all the extras in them (and of course the single dvds do as well).

I got the first released Azumanga thinpack (the white, 5-case box, not the blue 2-case box, or the most recent brick) and the Azumanga Movie short is stripped, and I assume the others don't have it as well.
Utawarerumono (well, technically still an ADV title...) singles contained the 4 OVAs but the 2 FUNI "complete collections" took them out. I concider OVAs/shorts to be essentials to extras to keep in, but sadly they never seem to be :/ It's extra footage, not simple commentary/documentaries etc. |

Thanks for the info. I had no idea about those FUNi releases of Pani Poni Dash and Utawarerumono. I think I may go art boxes with singles. The ones I'm looking to get are Kino's Journey, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, and Elfen Lied. I should have bought these shows a loooooong time ago, but now I don't know what to do considering there's so many re-releases available. My shelf space is becoming limited so I've been thinking thin, but I don't want to sacrifice those ADV extras.

The Kino's Journey Complete Collection thinpack (3 DVDs) and the Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi thinpack box set (3 DVDs) do not come with any extras other than some ADV previews on the first disk.
Each of the Abenobashi singles come with good on-disk extras as well as a 12-page booklet. These booklets are not as useful as the ones that came with the Azumanga Daioh and Evangelion Platinum singles, but they are still nice to have if you are a fan of the show. But used Abenobashi singles are not easy to find, nor are they especially cheap. I originally bought two of the four Abenobashi singles on the used market... but when I realized I could get a used copy of the thinpack box set for much less than what the final two singles would cost, I bought it instead. Just speaking for myself, I found that I could live without the Abenobashi extras. That wasn't true of the Azumanga and Evangelion extras, where I did track down all of the single releases and probably paid more for them than what a thinpack collection would have cost. I bought the Kino's Journey Complete Collection brand new at a great price. It was simply easier than tracking down all of the singles. I've never seen a Kino's Journey single, so I don't know what I might be missing there in the way of extras. But Kino's Journey is such a great story that I don't really regret not having any extras for it. That is, you don't have to wade through the cultural differences between Japan and America as in Azumanga, nor does it have a complex plot like Evangelion, so I don't feel that my understanding of the show is limited by not having any extras. |

From what I've been told, if the thinpack contains the same amount of discs as the singles, they will retain the on-disc extras (ex. Noir, RaXephon, FMP). Not so sure about any booklets that the singles might have, though I'm guessing no. If the number of discs have been reduced, then the extras have been stripped, which is most of their thinpacks.

Even this doesn't hold true, as I have stumbled upon the rare thinpak with the same disc count, but still stripped of extras (I think Louie the Rune Soldier was one?) Basically, it's a case-by-case basis, and you should research whatever title you're interested in a bit before picking a version. It doesn't take too long to figure most of it out. |

Not all ex-ADV titles had their extras stripped. I own the Devil May Cry thinpak and those extras are intact. At AoD there's a link to a list of what extras were and were not kept in FUNi's releases of those titles. |
