Which opening animations do you think are most effective? It can be anything from the animation sequence itself, to just the song, or how well the song fits the animation sequence, or of course, how both set the tone of the series.
Higurashi no Naku Koroni from the same series sticks out to me, much for the reasons stated in the review for DVD 1. It's very much a dark etherial number, the sequence itself is rife with symbolism, and perfectly captures the innocence and darkness in each of the characters. Musically,it's clear the songwriter was channeling Yuki Kajiura there. Lilium from Elfen Lied works as well, maybe not the music, but the sad romantic aspect that runs under the show. That which Lucy desires she's unable to attain because of who she is. It's perfectly captures in the opening sequence. Plus I really like how it plays off the original painting. Finally, I'll say Dokoro-chan because I just finished watching an ep of it. Simply put, the very plot (used loosely) and idea is all wrapped up in both the song and the animation. It's as weird, cute, bloody and catchy as the series. |

The best opening for a BAD anime has to be the one for Tenjou Tenge. Very fun song, very fun, clever and well animated dance theme, sexy without being obnoxious. Really makes you want to watch the show.
Very misleading. I think I watched every episode (It did just stop in the middle of no where, right?) |

The best I could think of is the opening of Record of Lodoss War. Mentioned in some other thread not so long ago. The anime would be sitting on the top of my top 10 list if it was as good as the opening; unfortunately, it's not. The opening alone is simply majestic though. But the anime was a disaster, even for a huge fan of western dragons such as myself, or perhaps because of that fact it was a disaster.

Have a feeling this might get moved to the music section, but
For me, it's always been Cromartie High School. For a series with 11 minute episodes, I still watched this OP every single time, I feel like it's just sucking me into its world of absolute bizarre and it really gets me in the mood for the show, which is about as sensical as the OP (the OP of course containing several nods to manga-only events) |

Nah. This is also about the animation involved, so I don't think it fits the music section more than it does here. Wonder if the new DVD of Record of Lodoss War will include a creditless opening. There's an image there that I really want as my new avatar. Obviously, it has nothing to do with you people, I just want to look at the image every day. |

The one that immediately comes to mind for me is Animal Yokocho. The OP pretty much sums up the entire spirit of the show - it's like Galaxy Angel in that, if you don't like the OP, you're probably not going to like the actual anime.
Haibane Renmei is another really good one, IMO. It completely enchanted me from the moment I first saw it, and I watched it at the beginning of every episode of the show. Finally, how could I forget the opening credits of Paprika? Not only are they brilliant as a stand alone sequence, but they totally hooked me into watching the rest of the movie for its own sake and not just because I'd heard so much about it. |

Lucky Star. The first time I saw this OP. I pretty much said "WTF, what drugs were they on when they did this." The opening, while not random (if you watch the entire show) is still pretty random and very upbeat. I feel that it fits perfectly with the plot-less atmosphere of the show.
K-On!. Someone had to mention it. It might as well be me. I enjoy this OP because it pretty much explains what the entire series is about in 1.5 minutes. Girls who play music at school (most of the time). And they are very moe. It's effective and enjoyable for that reason to me. No need to add anything extra. Durarara!. I LOVE this OP. The music is awesome, the animation is great, and the way the constantly remind me who these 1239480392 characters are is a great help to me personally. Not to mention that they flawlessly splice in the "previously on..." segment into the credits with the music continuing. I could watch this OP all day. Clannad: After Story. This one sits well with me because of the amazing way the music and animation sync up and pretty much tell a story. I always like plot based things (even in music...don't judge me  ), so this one was very effective.
Railgun, Fairy Tail's first OP and a few others also cross my mind, although they are mostly because of the kick ass music they employ, rather than because of the animation involved. Still effective though. Overall, I tend to judge an OP as effective if I sit though it every time. Whether it is because of the music alone, or because of something creative the animation team does with the music (See Durarara's previously on... section) |

Gotta say I love the opening for Antique Bakery. The animation involved is really unique, makes everything look like paper dolls in a dollhouse like setting, and I really enjoy the song. (can't remember what it is called just now) It's upbeat and relaxing, very nice.
Paradise Kiss is of course on my list, I even know the name of the song. Lonely in Gorgeous. Absolutely fabulous..beautiful looking and sounding, least to me. I seem to prefer endings to openers, when trying to think up ideas for this topic. |

I fell in love with the opening for Welcome to the NHK - it sets a melancholy mood for me every time, and the lyrics of the song match the vibe of the show perfectly. Best OP of all times IMO.

Lots of interesting and quirky claymation [i think] which is what the show is all about! [quirky art behavior, not claymation lol]. My favorite anime openers are from Clannad After Story, Toradora!, Black Lagoon, and a few more. What makes a good opener is it gets you all excited to watch the episode.

I just started watching Maria Holic, and I consider its opening quite effective. The animation and visuals are mesmerizing; I haven't seen all of SHAFT's work, but out of all of their shows that I have seen, Maria Holic is the most stylish — I'd even go as far as saying the people at SHAFT are the masters of style. Also, the opening song completely fits the opening animation — in meaning and tone. I love that crazy guitar (or is it a bass) slide-sounding riff in the opening's song.

I personally love any opener that is completely synched-up with the music--most of the Bleach openers and both Fullmetal Alchemist (original) openers.
I like the Hellsing opener. It's all spot-colored and bizarre, and the song fits really well. classicalzawa mentioned the Cromartie opener, and I totally agree! Along the same line is the Papuwa opener, which has a great song (Tabibito by LOOSELY), which just gets me hyped up to watch the zaniness. Cowboy Bebop has a great one, too, with TANK! and the monochromatic graphics. It's very artistic. |

I think the opener for the TV series AIR,'Tori no Uta,' does a fantastic job at setting the mood for the entire series. The song itself is haunting and melancholy, while the visuals for the opener are very good and reflect the series as a whole.
More recently, I think Oasis's opening for Eden of the East, was absolutely fantastic. It was a bit jarring at first to hear an entirely English song as an opener, but after you get over the, 'wuh? Oasis?' reaction, it's a cool song and the reversely rendered photographic backgrounds are amazing. Coupled with interesting quotes and very bold graphics/character designs, it's a very complete and fascinating opening sequence. |
