It's screening in select American cities this year.

That large statue of Hel shall at last make its return to the silver screen, and gone shall be those intertitles describing missing scenes.
I myself would like to see the action scenes played at a lower frame rate than other parts of the film, for they seem to be somewhat sped-up. Seeing spoiler[the robotic Maria leading violent hordes at an unnaturally sprightly speed] produced a more comical effect than a dramatic one. Nonetheless, I have a good deal of admiration for Lang's film. Though the romance angle did not meet the same standard as the sequences depicting the political imagery integral to his morals, the holistic effect is quite surprising for a film of such an age. spoiler[Moloch!] My preference, of course, lies with Rintaro's film of the same name, very loosely inspired by a mixture of Tezuka and Lang. This should come as no surprise to those who are aware of my bias. |
