I barely ever hear about Oh My Goddess anymore and I was curious how many people are still following it. Since it's the longest-running manga in America you'd think it would have a huge fanbase, but maybe not?

I've had the first 6 volumes for a couple years and pretty much forgot about the series until now. I just started rereading it and realized how much I enjoy it. So who else out there has some OMG volumes collecting dust, and who's still buying them as they're released? I know the volumes get a lot less meaty (in size, plot, and dialogue) after volume 20, but is it no longer worth buying after that point? What's your opinion of the direction the series has taken and the series as a whole, and would you say I should pick it up again or cut my losses now?

I'm a rather recent fan on OMG, but its already become one of my all time favorite series (both the anime and the manga). I started with the the tv series just a few months ago, and loved it so much that I bought all of the singles w/ the artboxes for both seasons, the Collectors Edition of the OVA (Which I happened to come across in a used video store), and started buying the manga. Although I'm only afew volumes in, so I cant really comment about the lack of "meatiness" in the later volumes. But even so, the thought of that doesn't dissuade me at all from buying more. Once I reach that point I'll (hopefully) still happily be buying each volume. Because, as I see it, more Oh My Goddess is always a good thing, regardless of a lower page count and lack of a "meaty" plot.

I like Oh! My Goddess, but I'm not actively collecting it any more. After a while (most noticeably in the teens) the Belldandy-Keiichi romance begins to stagnate, and even to lose some of its continuity. They'll admit they like each other, start acting like a couple, even get close to kissing - but then it resets back to them trying to work up the nerve to admit their feelings.

The other aspects of the series continue to progress, though. Explorations of Urd's spoiler[demonic] half (and meeting her spoiler[mother]), Skuld adapting to Earth (and finding her first spoiler[crush] . . . heck, Keichii even finished his spoiler[degree and got a job]. Its just the key element (the Belldandy-Keichii romance) that goes nowhere in later volumes

If you like the manga, you might also want to try the tv series - at least the first season. A revisionist retelling of the first 6 volumes of the manga (along with some later material mixed in), it places a lot of focus on the core romance, and allows it to progress (relatively) normally. Season 2 is also good, covering material from the 4th Goddess up through Hild, but it suffers from some of the same stagnation issue as the manga

The manga comes out monthly, doesn't it? The manga itself seems nowhere near climaxing however spoiler[since the current arc involves the team going to the netherworld to help Hild defeat a demon who had overthrown her] perhaps there IS some sign of climax? Still, they have random adventures like this all the time.

...maybe the priority is just in doing art for the Tales and Sakura Wars games rather than focusing on the manga? I would just like it to end one day :/ Maybe then they'll make another anime series to cover the main points and finish up. Maybe...

Not quite. It seems to be on a pretty strange schedule, with either a 1, 2, 3, or 4 month gap between releases.

Heres a post that adam_omega (from Seven Seas) made on the mania forums about OMGs release schedule:

Here's a breakdown of recent books:

11 - Feb '09
32 - May '09
12 - Jun '09
33 - Sep '09
13 - Nov '10
34 - Jan '10
14 - Feb '10
35 - Jun '10
15 - Sept '10
36 - Oct '10

So yeah... gonna be another 2 years before the series bridges the gap... sigh...

Oh I meant monthly in its Japan serialization... Just for the fact that chapters aren't out weekly, or else it wouldn't take what is it now? Over 20 years? To MAYBE have it completed...

If it's doing well and continues to make money and have a fan base why stop? There was a huge gap in terms of years between the release of the OVA's and the new tv series seasons. If nothing else the fact they decided to make the 2 tv seasons after all that time is a testament to the long lasting appeal of the series. Eventually it would be nice to see and end but it continues to be entertaining and I for one am happy to go along for the ride until the eventual end arises. Personally they have a wealth of ideas to work with even still. Such as exploring more into Belldandy's past. I mean short of the movie we never see much about her past. What wishes has she granted for other people? Has she ever had any previous loves? I mean I don't even know if they've ever said exactly how old she really is. Maybe explore more about why her father got with Hild (Urd's mom) in the first place. Who is her mother. Those are just a few ideas that could easily spawn new chapters and arcs.
