Well, the question's pretty much the way I way I asked it, do you think the industry needs another "Naruto" or "DBZ", in other words, another big shonen, over here in the U.S.?

Personally I think it's a debatable topic. It's true that Naruto and Dragonball Z are not only two of the best selling anime in the U.S, but were also two of the highest rated animated programs as well. They were also extremely marketable and brought some good revenue back to Japan. On the negative side though, these titles, took views away from other titles, and are often the victims of abuse and insult because of their high pedestal.
are theo
I think that these kind of titles are probably necessairy during this recession in the industry, but it's hard to say if it's too late for these kinds of titles to have a large enough impact on the industry. If such a title is brought here, Fairy Tail and Reborn, are the two holding the most potential, but it's hard to say of companies are willing to invest in these sort of long running titles again...

[EDIT: Fixed your thread title so it would actually fit. -TK]

Katekyo Hitman Reborn and Fairy Tail are already part of The Industry. The two manga pop up in the top 10-20 on the Japanese charts and on the NYTimes top list from every so often yet behind Naruto and OP. The same can be said for their anime counterparts on Japan TV.

I do agree more anime on American TV would be nice and FT/KHR could do that but the two would not likely reach the heights of DBZ or Naruto.

What potential? The two have been fully released in anime/manga form in Japan and manga form in America. If any long running shonen anime have potential it would be One Piece and Detective Conan but look where those two ended up in America. FT and KHR are way behind in potential when compared to those shows.

I do not think that they should because close-minded people will just start to associate the next generic shounen anime to what they think anime is in general. While it is true they make a lot of money, producers should try promoting anime series that will draw more collective interests in people over here in the US. Like I said before, people still have this attitude towards anime and promoting something on a larger scale (such as Monster or LOGH) will end up drawing in more people, rather than just immature 12 year olds.

I doubt if any anime now have a potential to reach the point where DBZ and Naruto or Sailor Moon are. Anime industry at all is changing- the Net give us a possibility to get everything that is animated, so there no more will be the situation when nearly everyone watch the same thing, because it's on TV.
Even if a miracle happened and something would become so popular for 99 % it won't be LOGH or Monster or something like it. Even in anime fandom that titles are niche, so I don't know how an older shows like it would become popular. I would totally accept new shouen-martial-arts show as a hit, because they make lots of people to search for information and came across new, better titles.

when is the industry ever NOT in need of another smash hit anime with a high episode count and with a high market potential?

me being a huge dbz and saint seiya fan, i was drawn to naruto,....and after i watched naruto, i was really satisfied with it as it so closely followed the shounen formula,...thankfully...well......at least up to the conclusion of the save sasuke arc,...where it then turned into a nauseating 70 episode display of fillers. *blah*XP
"i hope i'm not giving anything away there."

Bleach...on the other hand, is alot better and closer to dbz than naruto ever was. plus ichigo is 1000x more likable than naruto whos superpowers are the power to increase his "i'm annoying you to death" factor.
its funny how that show survived considering that the main character on that show is the least likable of the entire character roster.
orochimaru is more beloved than naruto.lol!

-but thats all off-topic.

people really "hate on" shounen series...because shounen rules the world. people want to deny it its god-tier status. i really don't understand why. if it promotes anime, to kids or older generations, whats wrong with it?
if it does what it does well, why complain over its success in its action/adventure formula?

so, yes...imo...the industry needs another shounen megahit.
or at least i do.

Artistically - No, Not ever.

Financially - Struggling studios could certainly use the cash.

My opinion in a nutshell. =)

Personally- No I wouldn't considering as the episodes drag on, the quality of plot suffers, the series prefers to have its pivotal characters alive even when resorting to deus ex machina (spoiler[I'm looking at you Naruto [the Pein arc] and DBZ [the Dragonballs being the show's DEM machine]]) and characters/ plot in most instances are a mish-mash of different shounen anime cliches.

Economically- Sadly, yes. Shounen anime have been the gateway drug for many of us to get into anime where we started off with anything like Naruto, Bleach and DBZ thanks to its constant mainstream exposure. Bringing in more fans means maintaining new fanbases for the anime industry to thrive for years to come.

People love to hate on the shonen anime. But really, what else has the chance to be the big blockbuster that anime needs (and wants) right now? Shonen is so popular because of its broad appeal despite being mostly kids shows, and that is what the industry needs to grow the fanbase. As great as the "art" series are, they'll never pull enough numbers to raise the industry's sails.

As far as length goes, I think the next big anime would have maybe 3 or 4 half-seasons (36-52 episodes). That would be long enough to keep them coming back for longer, giving the industry more time to hook 'em. But at the same time its not so long that people stop caring. It's got to be interesting, though. Something people will want to talk about. Looking at it from a non-fan's viewpoint, hearsay is probably what would get me into a show.

Anything that can bring piles of money into the US industry is wanted. Not sure why anyone would say no, unless they are fine with the companies barely staying alive.

What's wrong with it? The plot for every shounen anime is: "MUST BE STRONGEST! OH NO, SOMEONE BEAT ME! MUST TRAIN! LEARN SUPER SPECIAL TECHNIQUE! HOORAY I BEAT HIM! OH NO, SOMEONE STRONGER APPEARED! FILLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRR!" Rinse and repeat.

While plenty of people get dragged into anime because of Naruto and the like, I know plenty of people that similarly refuse to watch anime because they assume all anime is like it. Stale writing, repetitive fight layouts, and the complete lack of an ending can easily turn people off.

The industry can ALWAYS use another show as successful as DBZ and Naruto. But I'd quite like it if the show wasn't the same trite bullshit as the others.

People are not saying no to something that will bring more money in the US industry.
Some of the nos are because of calling Fairy Tail and Reborn the hits that are needed. Being replacements would mean those shows would have or be paced to pass Naruto or DBZ but they are far behind in popularity and sales most other shounen out.

This what the industry needs thread is just a masked FT and Reborn request thread.

I understand how you feel and, to an extent, I can see where you're coming from, but what you said is simply not correct. Continue reading and I'll explain why.

Except shounen, nor any other demographic, is "god-tier status.” It’s also not obligatory for a shounen series to follow some kind of “action/adventure formula.” A title bearing the name “shounen” doesn’t necessarily describe the style or genre of the series, it just describes the target demographic.

But I might have an answer for your question. I really don't think people hate shounen just because it's shounen. I think that more than anything, some of the series that are considered the most overrated out there happen to be shounen material, such as Naruto and Bleach. Some people immediately think of the 2 aforementioned series when they think of shounen--they find themselves unaware of the fact that there are plenty of other anime out there(that are absolutely nothing like anime like Naruto and Bleach) that are classified as shounen. I mean, I've met plenty of people who think that shows such as Death Note, FMA, and Baccano! are some of the(if note the) best anime out there, but a number of those people don't realize those shows are shounen. People often forget that things like shounen, josei, kodomo, shojo, and the like are not genres, they just describe the demographic that the material is aimed for. I mean, I don’t really like shows such as Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like shounen. Baccano! and Death Note are both on my personal top 10 anime list, and they’re shounen(despite the fact that they’re almost nothing like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece in terms of story, pacing, characters, and such.)

---

To answer the question for this topic, I just think the industry needs another big hit, plain and simple. I don’t care what it’s like.

Yes and no. No, if it's another mindless generic shounen series. Yes if it's a continuation of Sekirei, D.Gray-man, Kaze no Stigma, or Claymore when they're ready, or a similarly slightly more sophisticated shounen-ish type series like those, by all means bring it on, please.

I wouldn't say I dislike shounen type series, but they're rarely all that great either in my opinion. My favorites are usually the ones that end rather than those that stretch on forever. Preferably those like Buso Renkin, Fullmetal Alchemist, Kurokami, Needless, and Scryed that are relatively short.

I'm face palming right now. I can't remember how many times I've said this to people, yet here I am on the receiving end of the same lecture.

I'd be down with a continuation of Claymore. I'm not sure it's done good enough stateside to warrant it though.

Anyway, financially speaking, I don't see why a company wouldn't try to create a shounen type show that would attract huge audiences. I mean, seriously, when it's money that matters you're not caring how good your plot is - you're caring how many viewers you can get. I can't fault a company for making such a show. And who cares if people think that's all anime is. There will always be those of us who have good shows to lend out to prove them wrong.
