With the online DVD rental services, you can keep the DVDs as long as you want as long as you continue paying their monthly fee.

Actually, I've rented from Animeforest multiple times. However, they don't do the "monthly fee membership" routine. This is why, personally, I liked them. I've seen a lot of anime, and am pretty selective about the new titles I care to watch. With them, I simply rent the title I want for 3.99$, and they ship it off to me. No monthly fee. Basically, just like renting from the video store. You keep it for only 10 days after it arrives, and they have a prepaid envelope for you to send it back in.

There is no monthly membership fee with Animeforest. If you are looking to have some anime sitting around your house for a month or more, which you have rented, then Animeforest isn't the right gig. if you keep a DVD that you've rented from them for months and months, I'm sure you'll receive outrageous penalities, or be charged for the purchase of the DVD eventually. I'd try Greencine if you're interested in that sort of thing, which has an amazing catalogue, and you can get a membership for about 20$ a month. It's all very well explained on the Animeforest website.

Animeforest, though, is a good place to rent. I recommend it.

I use netflix.com, which does let you keep 3 DVDs for as long as you want with a monthly fee (I think it's a little over $20 per month). Netflix is basically an online Blockbuster, but it has a TON of anime titles. They're missing stuff like Excel Saga and Gravitation, but really, it's a large catalog. I'm thinking of switching to rentanime.com though, since they really do seem to have every anime DVD. Rentanime.com is $20 for 3 DVDs per month too.

I've used AnimeForest too, but the pay-as-you-go method is inconvenient for me. Basically, it means I have to nag my mom for her credit card everytime I want something Rolling Eyes Not good for minors like moi without them.

Actually, Blockbuster is planning on becoming the online Blockbuster pretty soon.

Blockbuster online and offline is a joke. *citing their very limited Anime & Movie catalog*. (especially when it comes to niche films and Anime.) I would stick with Netflix. Greecine has a bigger variety of Anime titles and such. but the waiting time (for Anime titles) and 3-4 day delivery window, are attrocious!

Atleast Netflix has Red Shadow (a movie that is often considered in the vein of a "live action Anime") Where's GC's copies?!? Razz

I agree with the waiting times for Greencine when it comes to anime. I think they only have one copy per anime dvd so the wait time does seem long. I currently subscribe to Greencine mainly to rent indy films and hollywood blockbusters. I usually get my Greencine dvds in 2 or 3 days so its still pretty fast =)

On blockbuster, I've noticed blockbuster ads are appearing everywhere online now. ( on AIM, on moviefone, etc..). I guess netflix has both Walmart and blockbuster to worry about now.

For anime, I currently subscribe to Animetakeout.com. Their anime selection isnt as good as Greencine, but the staff said that they are doing a big inventory update soon. For now though, theres plently for me to rent there. ship times are fast and the staff is friendly. And i actually don't have to wait weeks to rent the new releases like Gundam Seed.

I want to try Animeforest, for those few dvds I can't rent at the above 2 places since i can just rent a la cate. Are the ship times for Anime Forest pretty fast?

As for rentanime.com, I did their 2 week trial and walked away pretty unhappy with the service. Granted, they do have a huge selection of anime...but they have huge problems. Their queue system is really simple, with no extra features at all. they dont even have a meter to tell u whats available, so you have no idea what the wait time for the dvds are. people are getting all their dvds out of order ( volum 4 before vol 1 and 2 sort of thing ). I added 30 dvds to my queue, and none got shipped.

I've never tried netflix before, but with all those distribution centers...I'm guessing its pretty fast? Maybe I should try the netflix trial.

Anyone notice that Walmart gives a 30 day trial? thats amazing.

Well, I had a bad experience, maybe other people had better luck. I do know for a fact that they still have no way to indicate that you want to watch a series in order and theres no availability meter ( it doesnt say for example, short wait or long wait etc ).

They sent out an email telling people to add vol 1....wait for the "it got shipped email " and then add vol 2, to make sure you dont get your volumes out of order. There were also times when they didn't process/send out dvds for a couple of days.

I also had a bad experience with Rentanime.com, I think they just need time to get their act together.

I did the 2-week trial with the agreement to spend $10/per month for 1 DVD at a time. As soon as I signed up, they had a DVD in my mailbox. I watched it and sent it back immediatley (hey they won't send more 'til it's back), but never heard any more from them. It seems as soon as they billed me for the first month, the e-mails from them regarding DVDs I want to rent stopped. I just got an e-mail today that I'm getting another, but it's vol 3 (waiting for vol 2).

I was planning to discontinue this service anyway since I'm going to college, my address with be changing, not to mention I probably can't afford the monthly fee every month.

Hopefully in the future this service will improve. I should try Animeforest, that seems more up my ally.

Wow, I guess I've been living under a rock. Embarassed

After hearing all those bad things about rentanime.com, I'm seriously reconsidering my wish to switch from netflix. Netflix doesn't have any "lock" to make sure your movies are sent in order, but they're almost always sent in order anyway, as long as there's no wait for a particular title. Most anime titles don't seem to have waits. And when there is, Netflix gives you of an idea of how long a wait (i.e. Short Wait, Long Wait). Not too specific, but when compared to rentanime.com, Netflix doesn't seem to shabby.

Oh by the way, does anyway use animetakeout.com? I just found out about it, and no one seems to be complaining about it...yet.

I use animetakeout.com. I've been a subscriber for a month already. So far I really like them. You can lock your entire queue, a portion of the queue, or you can just lock a series so you won't get stuff out of order. I usually get dvds that are top 5 in my queue. I live in California and they ship from CA so shipping times for me is fast.

Only problem I have with them so far is that they don't have a huge selection but its probably just because they are new. The staff says that there will be a major inventory update soon. so we'll see. In the meantime, I still find plenty of stuff to rent.

PS... they don't carry hentai for those of you who watch those. Greencine carries adult titles so you might want to try there.

I joined AnimeTakeout a few weeks ago for the trial and so far I happy with the wide selection that they carry. They even have the Ranma series which I been dying to finish! Animetakeout turnaround time is pretty fast. I usually get my dvds in about 2 days. Give them a try since they are offering a free 2 week trial.
