---------------------------------- Episode 02: Sentence: Clear the Zewan Gan Tunnels (Part 1) ---------------------------------- Summary: Xylo asks Teoritta to end their pact, but she refuses. The heroes are tasked with defeating faeries in the Zewan Gan mines. When they arrive, they're surprised to find out that most townspeople have not evacuated due to the faeries being confined with the use of sacred seals. After setting up base, they receive a distress signal from Kivia inside the sealed area. Later, a trapped miner asks them to rescue the others. However, it is revealed the original mission was to cave the mine in with explosives. ---------------------------------- Comments: I can't tell if everyone not a hero is just trying to be pragmatic, or if they're just a bunch of don't-do-the-right-thing contrarians. The Holy Knights feel like a bunch of pawns, which is kind of surprising, because you'd think that kind of zealotry would epitomize in a more positive way. But maybe the writing wants us to think the opposite? Historically, religion and zealotry have provided a good amount of dissension, divisiveness, and turmoil, so I guess this just goes to further illustrate that notion. It's nice to see the heroes roster expanded. Norgalle seems like an eccentric fellow. He's like that "crazy old coot that's not all there, but might actually be right on occasion" character trope. And Tatsuya seems to fit that "not communicative, but can physically unleash hell on enemies" trope. They reference that Tatsuya is a little memory-mushed from being resurrected. I'm curious when/if they'll actually show us what the resurrection process looks like. I mentioned the Lazarus Pits from Batman lore in the Episode 01 review. For those not familiar, they're essentially chemical pools buried deep within the earth at various locations. And when a sick, nearly dead, or deceased person is submerged in it, the body is rejuvenated/resurrected to peak physical condition, healing all wounds and ailments, and even reversing the person's age, depending on the duration of submersion. However, there's a major side effect of temporary insanity and increased strength once the person comes out. They basically go berserk and try to destroy anything and everyone around them. In most cases, it wears off after a short amount of time. But I think I read the effects can still linger, sometimes twisting the mind, from what it previously was. Tatsuya is obviously an example of what this resurrection stuff does to a person. Although, I'm curious as to the actual mechanics of it all. Like, does the resurrection occur on the same body? Can the soul of the person transfer to a different body, if the old one is FUBAR? And then there's the whole mental side of it. Does the person's mind just keep getting more and more primal? Should be interesting to see how they eventually explain this. I also wonder just how deep this whole goddess mythos is. Do enough of them exist that they can be used like power-up banners for specialized groups doing important missions? Are they all this chatty, and what else do they represent, other than being a symbol of religious beliefs and political machinations for the kingdom and Holy Church? It's a very cool world that I hope they expand on. I also want Xylo to find some of his betrayers and serve out their justice. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: Last edited by Tony K. on Mon Feb 02, 2026 2:57 pm; edited 1 time in total |

That actually went a lot better than I expected it to. While the overall tone of the show is very much not a cheerful one it seems like not every mission will end with tragic results. A demon lord was killed and from what I saw nobody (or atleast not many) died among the survivors and knights. The episode was hectic in a good way with things getting increasingly desperate and Norgalle has really grown on me in a short period of time. Even Xylo is slowly coming around to Teoritta. |

A few reactions:
That crazy guy really is one hell of a monarch. Last week I said they didn't get as much bang for the buck as they could have out of his crazy routine. This week I'd say he delivered. The crazy man acts like an ideal king because he isn't acting...unlike "real" kings... Now that we're getting a chance to see Xylo having interactions with more people, especially ones he doesn't view as a threat like innocent victims and somewhat trustworthy comrades who aren't kleptomaniacs - his edgelord persona is getting softened and fleshed out a bit, and that's good to see. The priest's comment that the goddess wasn't worth anything since she wasn't any use as a weapon seems to confirm the church's attitude beneath their official stance. And I hope they keep introducing us to new "Heroes." It'd help keep the pot spicy. |

The arc finishes with the heroes successfully destroying the local demon lord presence despite orders to the contrary, but what a way for them to do it. It's easy to lose sight of the big picture with all of the pyrotechnics on screen, but the show is one of those that uses brief moments in its set pieces to introduce more exposition into the world setting. Even the penal legion members themselves have abilities which are not readily apparent until their hand is forced. Unsurprisingly Xylo is joined by his compatriots in the rescue mission. Tatsuya is just there for the killing and is easy to order around, but the false monarch is an interesting contradiction. His devotion to his "subjects" is more genuine than actual rulers, yet he is also aware that he is under indefinite sentence as a Hero and is worth less than his "subjects" alive or dead. His ability to craft runes at a higher efficiency than Xylo can manage is why he was retained as a hero despite high treason, and it is his overtuned invention which ultimately proves to be the weapon most suited to the task at hand. Tatsuya isn't just a berserker. Perhaps repeated resurrection has debased his sense of self so much that the brainwashing ability of the demon king scream has no effect on him. Not only that, he can temporarily increase his physical strength by doing his best imitation of the incredible hulk. When the power up wears off, he comically deflates like a balloon and is temporarily helpless. Although less interesting as a person than a bloodthirsty fighter, the secret behind his abilities could be good storytelling. Unlike the pilot episode where it was Xylo and Teoritta doing the heavy lifting, this time round everyone played their part towards victory. Teoritta provided the weapons for Xylo to use in place of his usual throwing daggers (at least until the lack of daylight meant he ran flat on power) while the monarch's dismemberment of his own foot to seize an opportunity to wound the main host set up the decisive blow. I'm not sure we really did find out why the Church left those miners to their fates, and with the penal legion moving on to the next mission we probably won't ever will. Like the head minder said, just because the penal legion members were guilty of capital crimes doesn't change the fact that their intervention saved more lives than following church orders and seeing them all turned to monsters. Xylo is too jaded to appreciate genuine gratitude now, so he passes it off to his new goddess who lives off it. Perhaps that's the arrangement which suits them for now until Xylo can overcome his mental trauma. |

I don't get it. Why is this show so obscure? This show has been a rollercoaster ride from episode 1 (and that was an epic episode, too). The action sequences are fluid, the pacey plot keeps churning, and the characters are pretty decent. Sure, it's not of the same caliber as JJK and Frieren, but man, this show has been solid. I mean, the action alone speaks for itself. This show should be getting more love. Where is it!? P.S. Rapata is right. The Holy Knights kinda suck at their jobs. |

Is it that obscure? Mind you, I am not on social media and only view a few anime sites.

I rarely hear anybody or anime sites discussing this show. JJK and Frieren are getting all the attention (the good kind), and even OPM 3 got more coverage during its time (the not-good kind).
I'm not asking for the show to get that much attention, but for a solid show, I can't see why people aren't talking much about it, either. At least, that's the impression I'm getting right now. |

No show can keep up a diet of non-stop action unless it has nearly unlimited budget, and animators need a break with episodes focusing on exposition and character development. This is one of those weeks, although not without its little easter eggs spread throughout the airtime. The whole team knows how strong Tatsuya is, so they load him with just about everything the penal legion has and he can march for days on end without tiring. The slacker on the other hand gets tired quickly, which makes viewers wonder why on earth he's in the same legion as Xylo and Tatsuya when he doesn't do any fighting whatsoever. That answer only comes towards the end in the form of the flashback and his negotiations with the fortress commander. Xylo being a fan of poetry composed of late stage madmen is a surprise, but he keeps to himself in the cell and very much likes his peace and quiet. Unfortunately it's his first standby order with Teoritta in tow, and she's begging him for attention. When the Paladin Commander shows up to give the legion its next orders and unload some of the stress she's been going through since episode one, we get to learn more about the Goddess mechanic itself and why Teoritta ended up in a coffin being transported through a monster-ridden force with virtually no escort. The swindler being sentenced for the crime of telling the truth completely unintentionally is another example of the rotting edifice that counts for government in this war-torn land. Like Xylo, anything inconvenient which can shake the foundations of the Church's political power is swiftly covered up and the unlucky victims shipped off to penal legions to eventually die and lose their memories. Unlike Xylo, our swindler has almost no combat ability (he's the team's negotiator) and even in the OP he's reduced to staying close to the thief to stay out of harm's way. One more member of the penal legion introduced right at the end. Given his appearance and his claim about having good eyes and ears, he's likely the member wielding the franchise's equivalent of a sniper rifle. He's also a loose cannon, evidenced by his enthusiastic slicing off of the cheating gambling stall merchant's hand. Since he's already sentenced and no one really knows unless they check his neck, it doesn't matter what they do to him provided they don't blow his head off and have to bring him back minus some of his personality. Xylo has guessed the priest who wanted the heroes dead in the mines kept his promise to punish the legion for disobeying church orders. That said, this mission has the odds heavily stacked against him and his team since the method they're proposing to kill this arc's demon manifestation isn't reliable and they're basically assigned a suicide mission to hold the demon lord indefinitely at the fortress. If they're going to get through this and be assigned another mission (which will indirectly help prove Teoritta's usefulness to the hitherto sceptical Church hierarchy), the whole team will have to backup Xylo and Teoritta somehow so that they can once again kill the demon manifestation for good and be released from their eternal guard duty. Setup episode out of the way, I'm expecting minimum three episodes to cover this arc. Two seems a bit rushed given how much time has been devoted to background exposition and mission setup alone. If they choose, four episodes might be used but that seems a bit long. Only time will tell. |

I have become even more unsure about the odds of humanity not becoming extinct long term. With the mention of several goddesses with powerful abilities being in play I thought that they may stand a chance (future sight seems real handy). Then came the reveal of the demons having infiltrated all the important organisations, it explains all the corruption but it means fighting a losing war. Given that the heroes are always on the front they can not clean house.
Anyway, it was indeed an episode without any action but it was fun to see the gang relax for a bit. It is also nice to see that the setting is not one big hellscape. Finally, Tatsuya might have the worst isekai fate ever. |

@AC x S I also don't do a lot of social media, but I was under the impression that Crunchyroll was putting some effort into packaging this anime as its next big thing. That said, I'm not really surprised it it's getting eclipsed by JJK and Frieren - they both have solid rock solid foundations and stellar starts this season as far as I'm concerned. I would be surprised if this anime was getting a lot of negative attention. I'm liking this anime more each week, which is a very good thing, but I didn't think the first hour long episode was a stellar start for reasons I already wrote about.
@Harleyquinn I agree that Xylo reading poetry in his cell was a bit of a surprise. It doesn't go with the grouchy, loud persona that's part of his tsundere routine. @Smurky - Yah, it was bad enough when the empire just seemed corrupt and incompetent. Now that we know demons can assume human form and infiltrate the military and the church and the nobility...yikes. For example, this latest decision to have Xylo's team sacrifice themselves makes absolutely no strategic sense. They've already eliminated two demon blights...even if they're chess pieces, wouldn't that make them valuable chess pieces at the very least? But it's hard to say if its really a malicious priest trying to turn Xylo's brain into oatmeal or whether a demon is pulling the strings to eliminate a threat. I'm curious to see what another goddess is like. |

I don't quite follow: if goddesses can be killed, then they can be reproduced? Maybe it's just another way of saying the Holy Knights can be reverse-engineered. The phrasing just felt odd. Not surprised to see that the show decided to tell how Venetim became a Hero himself. Every Hero has a story to tell, and we now know what happened to Xylo and Venetim. We're bound to find out what happened for Your Highness, Tatsuya, Dotti, and Tsav, too, right? I find it amusing that Venetim got sentenced for actually getting something right. Oh the irony.
I could be wrong about the reception toward the show. Maybe there are a lot of rave reviews so far that I haven't been hearing, and I don't follow Crunchyroll either. |

One episode for Xylo and the penal legion to prepare the defences for the castle, so that the plan to indefinitely poison the local demonic lord and pin it in place to keep the front closed can take effect. Only problem is, no matter how carefully Xylo and his allies plan there is no defence against the backstab sneak attack from an unexpected quarter. Teoritta might seem like an affection-starved kid who so happens to have magical powers which can help win wars, but it seems all of her peers are just as affection-seeking as she is. The difference being they're not as loud or as clingy as Teoritta, and they have powers which the powers that be deem superior to Teoritta's nearly infinite weapon generation. To top it off, Teoritta is capable of jealousy if she thinks her chosen knight isn't just ignoring her but flirting with the opposite sex. The captain Kivia on the other hand has completely mellowed when in Xylo's presence. Not only is he allowed to get close to her without her realising it, she will seek his advice and hold conversation with him if there aren't any of her social peers nearby. Xylo might not think much about her as she occupies the position he used to hold, but she's definitely working with him for her own objective of ensuring Teoritta is worthy of keeping her place on the battlefield rather than a lab rat fit only for dissection. Two unexpected developments this week: the arrival of a detachment of miners rescued from the previous arc to aid in the defences and the news of human collaborators willing to betray the human kingdom to allow for co-existence with the demonic forces. The former despite Xylo's best efforts are put to work by monarch Norgalle to better fortify one front with Norgalle's customized seals, yet Xylo was right that getting them involved would mean some of them would die. They did, but not in the way Xylo expected. Learning from Venetim the swindler about the existence of the fifth column is bad enough, but seeing them actually swing the battle decisively in the invader's favour is a hefty blow. Even if the penal legion somehow get out of this alive, the knowledge alone will mean follow-up from the church to cover up the knowledge (especially as the commander who ordered this operation appears to confirm Venetim's suspicion that some factions within the church are clandestine co-existence conspirators). The sniper Tsav is a cheerful, talkative, amoral psychopath of a serial killer. He also happens to be the best sniper in the army (penal legion or otherwise) and in some ways has found his calling in life. Plenty of killing to slake his instincts, and he'll be brought back to life if it's feasible to do so. Although he feared the Hero sentence while he was still alive, it seems a few deaths have done enough to inure him to the miserable fate he's living through and to enjoy himself doing what he does best. Even he is going to struggle to hold down his front on his own since the gate is breached and their positions will soon be overrun, so Xylo as field commander will need to find a way to leverage his talents as best as he can. Xylo flat out refused the offer of 2000 soldiers as reinforcements despite Venetim's successful negotations. He must have one hell of a reason to reject the offer, even though he knows how badly they need every pair of hands they can get their hands on. If those reinforcements reach the battlefield anyway, they might just have a chance of turning the situation around. |

Besides the episode being rather exciting and very good looking it also had some interesting developments. They mentioned one currently absent hero who became a hero of his own volition for example. The heroes thus far are already pretty quirky but someone who wants that fate must be something else.
Human traitors appearing I did expect but not this soon. Given how many of them there are it is going to be hard to sweep it under the rug. The offer of 2000 soldiers seems a bit suspect too, it makes me wonder if there conflicting groups within the different factions (which would make it even messier). As for Teoritte, I wonder if the powers that be truly deem her to be of lower importance or if the demons simply want to be rid off her. |
