I think Appleseed applies, and so does a couple of eps. in The Animatrix. If you mean the struggle of man vs. machine and the like, I feel they are good choices.

The Matrix series was inspired by the original Ghost in the Shell movie. So you might like the Animatrix since you like GiTS.

For a few movies in the same vein as GITS;
Jin-Roh
: not really a man/machine movie, but it has alot of the the same feel and psychological aspects.
Patlabor: Alot of mecha (if you liked that) involving a futuristic police force.
Armitage III Polymatrix: another futuristic tale about interaction between humans and androids.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a little different from GITS, but if have not seen it, it would be a good series to see. I would also recomend Gasaraki, which is a very good series as well

Forgot about that good call, and throw in Armitage: Dual Matrix while you're there. Also, can't go wrong with most anthing else Masamune Shirow has done.

And forget Polymatrix and just go with the original OVA that was the source material for Polymatrix. Also, perhaps try Bubblegum Crisis. I've only seen the original OVA, and not the TV re-make, but the remake is supposed to be a more fleshed out version of the original.

Yeah, I'd also recomend anything in the Bubblegum Crisis universe, Bubblegum Crisis, Bubblegum Crash, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, AD Police, all good stuff.

Everyone's thinking it, I'm just saying it, Cowboy Bebop. Number one in my opinion.

The problem with Cowboy Bebop in this circumstance is that it's not "hard sci-fi" in the vein of Ghost in the Shell.

Ghost in the Shell was the best of the breed born out of Japan's love in the early to mid 80's of sci-fi films like Star Wars and Blade Runner. The theme of technology fusing and altering people's lives, beliefs, and perception of themselves became omnipresent in topflite anime.

Cowboy Bebop, on the other hand, is an example of the eventual backlash against that ideal. Bebop deals with the individuals in the stories and how they react to each other. It's neither better nor worse, but Bebop is much more inwardly focused and personal from a philosophy standpoint.

Also, from a setting standpoint, Bebop's sci-fi setting is practically window dressing. Ghost in the Shell is absorbed in the technology of its world, so much so that its characters are a part of that technology. Bebop instead is inspired by the world of today, and lets the science fiction of its world allow for a fantasy playroom for the writers. Two very different concepts.

As it stands, the suggestions of Jin Roh, Patlabor, the Armitage movies, and Shirow's other works (like Black Magic M-66 or Appleseed) are very good. I'd also suggest Battle Angel Alita, Gundress, Macross Plus, and Akira. All would be good films/series to watch.

Cowboy bebop can fit into many catagories, including phycological, but it is still sci-fi too. Yes, I agree that it's not strickly like the sci-fi's mentioned in this forum, but it's still worth checking out.
