For those wanna keep track which animation films qualify for the Oscars, there's this Oscar animation tracker.

While perusing that in the meantime, ya can listen to this beautiful piano Ghibli music (guess which songs):

Walking with Dinosaurs qualifies? It's sort of a mix of CG and live-action settings.

Who knows. Oscar eligibility rules only say: "In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture's running time."

Whether it is submitted for nomination and then ruled truly eligible is still to be determined.

Alvin and the Chipmunks and Yogi Bear both qualified in their respective year I think. They obviously didn't get the nod.

I noticed it said that some higher-ups in Pixar were in a somewhat powerful position here.
Is that a conflict of interests?

yu3: Supposedly, we'll be seeing Wolf Children and Momo as possible contenders.

Wolf Children isn't eligible for the foreign language award (it premiered before October 1, 2012), but as long as it had a theatrical run in LA county for at least 7 days, it would be eligible for animated feature.

But that LA theater run must start before or on its home video release date of November 23, 2013.

Rule Two: Eligibility

  • 3. Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. This includes broadcast and cable television as well as home video and Internet transmission. Motion pictures released in such non-theatrical media on or after the first day of their Los Angeles County qualifying run remain eligible.

It had already had a theatrical run, though. I just don't know if it was long enough. Because it did have a US run in theaters long before the DVD was released. *went to the one in Seattle*

Can't seem to find its LA run (festivals don't count).
