Flu epidemic alert issued for all 47 prefectures

  • TOKYO — The National Institute of Infectious Diseases has issued a flu epidemic alert for all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    In the week from Jan 11-18, there were more than 2 million cases of influenza treated by hospitals nationwide for the second straight week.

    The prefectures with the highest numbers of flu patients were Miyazaki (with an average of 99.58 infected persons per medical center), Okinawa (84.78), Kumamoto (73.59) and Saga (69.74).

    The institute said it is expecting the epidemic to continue until mid-February.
