That's a different term with the same pronunciation. The term for boy is "男の子" or literally, "male child." The term for the phenomenon described in the article is "男の娘" or literally, "male maiden." It's similar to how the term for a boys-love otaku ("fujoshi" or 腐女子) happens to be pronounced the same way as the term that has a very different meaning: 婦女子, which means a wife or family woman. |

The phenomenon has been around for a long, long time... like maybe at least 1000 years in Japan (and of course, much further back elsewhere like in Greece and Scythia)
