otokonoko (literally, "male maidens")

Last I checked, "otokonoko" literally just meant "boy".

That's a different term with the same pronunciation. The term for boy is "男の子" or literally, "male child."

The term for the phenomenon described in the article is "男の娘" or literally, "male maiden."

It's similar to how the term for a boys-love otaku ("fujoshi" or 腐女子) happens to be pronounced the same way as the term that has a very different meaning: 婦女子, which means a wife or family woman.

Different kanji. 男の子 is boy. 男の娘 is literally "male maiden". Both pronounced the same tho. I guess you could call it a pun.

EDIT: D'oh, Egan beat me to it. :p

As long as I'm not on it, and I'm able to stay well away from it. Hopefully Japan won't go down the slippery slope to join Thailand down in the valley. I find it hard enough to tell Asian "trap" from Asian "legitimate female". IME Asiatic males and females look disturbingly close, fashion doesn't help, and anime has flat-out lied about the average bust size in Japan. To say that the presentation of such in anime is the antithesis, the polar opposite, diametrically opposed to the sad flat truth would not be an understatement.

In short, it's already hard enough to tell, don't make it moreso. Rolling Eyes Laughing

If they do a Bridget, Mako-chan (from Minami-ke), and Hideyoshi (from Baka & Test) cosplay contest, I'm going on that tour even if I have to swim to Japan. Embarassed

The phenomenon has been around for a long, long time... like maybe at least 1000 years in Japan (and of course, much further back elsewhere like in Greece and Scythia)

That said, can regular otoko join in? Very Happy
