I guess Kickstarters are a great way to localise a VN without the publisher worrying about Piracy that much.

Yeah. Even in the case of works that were pirated before (like Clannad), many people are more motivated to pledge for the kickstarter to realize an official release than to buy the official release once it is realized.
Kickstarter sells hopes and dreams, essentially speaking.

Impressive that they were able to raise so much for a new title from a company with hardly any recognition for English-speaking fans.

They're all riding from the coattails of successful VN Kickstarters before them. People are pledging anything that looks interesting.

As someone observing from the sidelines, the PR guy definitely tried his best, and the company did its best to add new tiers whenever possible.
Also, Sekai Project and Mangagamer helped to advertise the kickstarter at about the halfway point and 5/6ths of the way respectively.
