There's a hobby of collecting minerals, especially ones that form big pretty crystals. Hardness is one of the main ways collectors tell minerals apart. I would bet anything that this series was created by a guy who is a "mineral otaku", and will please others of that group to the max.

I love Alexandrite's hair design.  It fits well with the seemingly speedy characteristic.
