I think few people expected this movie to be a success, especially since it's mostly aimed at people over 30 years.

Well I didn't. City Hunter has a huge following and nostalgia factor in Japan. It's super iconic there. The bigger obstacle was getting the film actually approved to be made, as soon as a studio finally took a chance on it it was guaranteed to do well.
