This is a pet peeve but can't they go back to calling it KOF '20/'21/etc? The years always gave the series a more competitive theme.

No, because then you'd have people constantly wondering where KOF 2004-2020 were all this time. SNK stopped using years because they couldn't maintain the yearly schedule they were able to for the first 10 years (and only barely, because KOF 2003 came out that year's December). They tried pulling a fake year stunt by calling Maximum Impact 2 "The King of Fighters 2006" for the American release, but it only wound up confusing people, because some wondered if that was the real sequel to KOF 2003, as KOF XI didn't come out on consoles until 2007; also, XI came out in arcades in English in 2006, which made it all the more confusing.
