I really like Astra: Lost In Space, so I hope Witch Watch will turn out to be good as well!

Glad to see Shinohara has a new series in the works. I haven't heard anything about him since he deactivated his Twitter a few years ago.

So, seems like WSJ got so desperate now with searching for hits to the point that they getting back their trumps - both Matsui and Shinohara are popular authors, and unlike Kishimoto (and Kubo, if we count Burn the Witch as Bleach spinoff, but it's running on Jump+) didn't tie their own popularity to only one work.

Wonder for how long they will do though, but it's still nice to see what they got in store. Though Matsui one looks like a gag manga - but to think of it, WSJ really misses with gag hits these days.

Actually, it's quite usual that "old" authors come back. In 2020 it was the failed Samurai 8 by Kishimoto, in 2019 the also failed Hiroshi Shibashi's Yui Kamio Lets Loose... Tutor Hitman Reborn's Amano is publishing in Jump+/MangaPlus... Also, they've been not called out of the blue, Matsui launched some one-shots before.

In summary: it's not exactly new since WSJ changes their line-up quite commonly.

Burn the Witch was published on Weekly shonen jump and they regularly bring back old authors

Damn there are only 7 manga in Weekly Shonen Jump that started before 2020.

I can't remember a time there was ever so few established series before and one is Hunter x Hunter not exactly 'ongoing' at the moment.

The fewer ongoing manga the more people stop buying and just wait for tankobon of manga they like which is what happens with HxH and even One Piece.

I've been doing an interesting exercise recently -- go to the Comic Vine page for a WSJ issue, remove all the oneshots and such (just leave series with normal chapter numbers), sort what's left by chapter number, and identify the median. If there's an even number of series, take the average of the two chapter numbers in the middle and call that your median. Make sure to note what manga or pair of manga that median comes from.

Here's what I've got going back to last May:

Quote:
January 22, 2021,Moriking,34
January 15, 2021,Mashle: Magic and Muscles/Moriking,38.5
January 8, 2021,Mashle: Magic and Muscles/Moriking,37.5
January 1, 2021,Mashle: Magic and Muscles/Moriking,36.5
December 14, 2020,Mashle: Magic and Muscles,41
December 7, 2020,Mashle: Magic and Muscles/Moriking,34.5
November 30, 2020,Mashle: Magic and Muscles/Moriking,33.5
November 23, 2020,Undead Unluck/Mashle: Magic and Muscles,38.5
November 16, 2020,Undead Unluck,38
November 9, 2020,Mashle: Magic and Muscles,36
November 2, 2020,Undead Unluck,36
October 26, 2020,Undead Unluck/Mashle: Magic and Muscles,34.5
October 19, 2020,Undead Unluck/Mashle: Magic and Muscles,33.5
October 12, 2020,Undead Unluck/Mashle: Magic and Muscles,32.5
October 5, 2020,Undead Unluck/Mashle: Magic and Muscles,31.5
September 28, 2020,Mashle: Magic and Muscles,30
September 21, 2020,Undead Unluck,30
September 14, 2020,Undead Unluck/Mashle: Magic and Muscles,28.5
September 7, 2020,Undead Unluck,28
August 24, 2020,Mission: Yozakura Family/Agravity Boys,38.5
August 17, 2020,Mission: Yozakura Family/Agravity Boys,37.5
August 3, 2020,Mission: Yozakura Family,44
July 27, 2020,Agravity Boys,28
July 20, 2020,Mission: Yozakura Family,42
July 13, 2020,Mission: Yozakura Family,41
July 6, 2020,Mission: Yozakura Family,40
June 29, 2020,Mitama Security: Spirit Busters,40
June 22, 2020,Jujutsu Kaisen/Chainsaw Man,90.5
June 15, 2020,Chainsaw Man,71
June 8, 2020,Jujutsu Kaisen/Chainsaw Man,88.5
June 1, 2020,Jujutsu Kaisen/Chainsaw Man,87.5
May 25, 2020,Act-Age/Jujutsu Kaisen,108
May 11, 2020,Jujutsu Kaisen,104

So when Moriking started, half of all WSJ manga had more than 100 chapters. Since then, they've said goodbye to Haikyu, Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs, Demon Slayer, We Never Learn, Act-Age, Chainsaw Man, Mitama Security, Agravity Boys, and now Moriking. And those are just the ones that lasted long enough to be in the older half of the manga in the magazine. (In the past, there've been periods when the median was consistently well over 100 -- the median for the January 1, 2009 issue was Nogami Neuro chapter 184.)

Meanwhile, they've been trying to make up for the losses -- above all Haikyu and the 2016 group -- by adding more new series than they have in decades, 18 in 2020 alone. And while I'm not sure how often established mangaka get new serializations in a typical year, 4 out of those 18 were from mangaka with previous Jump hits -- Shimabukuro, Kubo, Tamura, and Yabuki. (Ayakashi Triangle and Burn the Witch, at least, have been among their biggest successes of 2020, so Matsui and Shinohara coming back doesn't surprise me.)

Nige Jōzu no Wakagimi's visual looks kinda interesting.

The title Witch Watch reminds me of "wristwatch" (which I think is supposed to be a pun of) and the kids multimedia franchise Yo-kai Watch.
