I've always loved the Fate/ universe, the concept of the Holy Grail War, its masters and servants with their various backstories, the roller coaster of emotions of who lives and dies throughout the war, and, of course, the epic action sequences. I guess this special could be considered a kind of preview or prologue? I usually avoid specials and Episode 0's because I feel they have the potential to spoil things way too soon. But I enjoy the lore and mythos of Fate/ so much, I had to give this a look. I've seen the original Fate '05 series, Zero, Unlimited Blade Works movie and TV series, and the Heaven's Feel movies. I tried playing the visual novel a few years ago, but got busy and stopped around the beginning of the Fate path (like, right before Shiro summoned Saber). There are a lot of spinoff Fate anime that got me a little overwhelmed and I never checked those out. But the main series is pretty awesome, and this new one, at least, looks like it has the version of Archer/Gilgamesh from the main series, so I consider that curious enough to check this out. Also, A-1 Pictures producing and Sawano doing the music sounds like another winning combination. We get no S3 of Solo Leveling anytime soon, but I'll gladly take a new Fate series in the meantime. Woo-hoo, look at Edjwald stepping up and making threads! Thank you my good man. I'd pitch in and help but I'm incomputech... meaning I suck at computer stuff. I know how to host images but I don't know how to resize them. I tried to create the Doctor Detective thread the other day but the screenshot of the poster image I grabbed off of ANN looked to be twice the size of image that Tony posts and I haven't been able to figure out how to resize, yet. I'm mildly OCD-ish about this stuff so not being able to do that correctly verklempt me from doing a thread at all. I've downloaded gimp to resize things, just gotta figure out how to use it, now.

:::Digs wax out of ear with pinky::: So, if I'm reading that right, basically, blah blah blah, you're too drunk?
That's not to say I'm committing to doing all the upcoming anime, but I'll do a few more that I'm interested in today and in the days to come, and then people can step up and champion their own causes. Hope everybody had a Merry Christmas, or Yuletide if Beltane's name comes from deeply held pagan beliefs |

I actually made a thread back when the special came out, so merged.

Oh, hey Tony! You can just delete mine, or I will when the board lets me...having an issue there. And if you want me to stop doing this or do something different, just let me know. Hope you're having a merry one.

You keep doing what you're doing, Edjwald. I'll clean things up, later. I left the posts to keep context for the banter is all.

Smurky, yeah for me personally, this series will live and die by how well it can stand alone. Since it's about some kind of ersatz or cubic zirconia Holy Grail Tournament, there's a decent chance.

I am by no means a Fate superfan, but I do enjoy some of the incarnations, especially anything made by ufotable which tend to be sumptuous visual feasts. I had sort of forgotten about the Heaven's Feel movies but I think I will buy them off of Apple when I get back to my place and can see things on my big screen again. I watched the 1-hour Fate/strange Fake special recently and kind of dug it. Jack the Ripper is one of the Servants this time, so that's cool. Not so cool is the annoying presence of Gilgadouche. The Fate franchise loves his sorry ass, but I think he's a turd of the first order. Oh well.

Blood, your post reminds me a bit of those Fate zealots. Them saying just watch series x, y and z but in the reverse order while also watching these movies, reading these novels and looking up this info in the wiki and you will get it... mostly. Meanwhile I am just thinking that it all sounds like work.

I'm not trying to convert anybody to Fate-ism, I just tend to enjoy the animes. Mind you, the Fate-iverse is so massive, there's lots I haven't seen. And I haven't read any of the actual source material.

I liked the first Fate Stay Night <==I know a backslash goes in there somewhere. But even then, I didn't love it. There was lots of stuff I just shrugged off and went with because I liked the dynamic of the two main leads dealing with all kinds of weird stuff that I didn't have to understand to accept that it was weird stuff. I've tried a few others and never made it through the first three episodes.

I remember being highly irritated by the character of Shirou in Fate/stay Night (he was the lead along with Saber). He was always trying to protect Saber like she was some delicate little flower when in fact she could easily kick his ass. But I guess I've always been attracted to the central premise: magicians and their summoned servants who were heroes in their past lives duking it out for the prize of having a wish granted. Brilliant.

I was counting Shirou and Rin as the leads, not Shirou and his....avatar? Summons? Yeah, I know, Saber is all that and a tray of mini-muffins, and I just committed Fate blasphemy or whatever. I already said it, in the unlikely scenario that the Fate Series was interested in me romantically, it would be reading a book called "He's Just Not That Into You" okay? But I liked the way Shirou and Rin had a kind of charged rivalry, but they were still trying to retain their humanity despite the competition and stakes, and I kept watching because of that even though I kind of tranced through a lot of the show.
But I'll still give Strange Fake a shot. |
