Despite its length, I didn't stop reading this article until I reached the end, which reflects how much it interested me. Probably because I identified with its content: time moves on, things change and the best thing we can do is try to make the most of the time we have, both in terms of our personal achievements and in our contacts with other people.

Sometimes a job you only work for a year or even few months can stick with you for a long time. For Frieren, 10 years would be about the same as 1 year, so it would have had some sort of impact.

Tangentially to the essay's thesis, I recall reading at WashingtonPost.com that U.S. citizens who emigrate to other countries do so for entirely accidental and happenstance reasons.
