Good, but why they started with the second novel and not from the beginning? Very strange.

The first two novels take place at the same time.
The first novel is entirely from the perspective of the competing princesses, then the second shows what's going on in the rest of the court over that same time period.
It's possible they are actually doing both, given this casting news.
In general, this series tends to be in a completely different genre with each volume, and you never know what you're going to get.
(Also, I think the third novel in the second series is coming out in a few days, and there's no short story collections set in that era yet.)
