Not what I would have expected but it actually looks pretty good.

Definitely want to read this.

Appropriate that they're releasing it on October 2. The first Peanuts strip ran on October 2 1950. Don't know if it's a coincidence or if they planned it that way, but it's pretty cool either way.

Wow! I never expected to get a manga biography of Charles Schulz. It looks like a fun read and something I'd enjoy a lot.

Not the weirdest bio manga that I've seen. I think there was one about the Wright Brothers.

Wonder how many manga artists were influenced/inspired by Charles Shultz/Peanuts?

Snoopy and the gang are incredibly popular in Japan, so the existence of this bio doesn't surprise me in the slightest. What is surprising is that it's being localized, and Udon is the publisher. I would've thought Fantagraphics or IDW would be more likely to pick this up, since they've already published really nice Peanuts collections.

Yeah it's easy to forget since now we're so far removed from Schulz's death and the height of Peanuts' popularity (and the cultural relevance of newspapers in general) but it was a real cultural force back in the day and I'm sure that applied in Japan too.

I loved reading Peanuts while growing up (particularly my dad's old collections from the 60s and 70s, which I personally think was when the strip was at its height), and the art for this is pretty cute, so I might end up checking it out.

And yes, Peanuts has long been popular in Japan, so it's not too surprising this would be made, though it's still hard to believe that Schultz only died in 2000. I still remember the final Peanuts strip he put out, which was published in newspapers the day after he passed.

Don't underestimate how difficult it is to license things from Japan for a company with no experience doing it.

Fantagraphics or IDW might be the more obvious choice to us but for the japanese licensors a known partner like Udon seems like the safer bet.

Oh, for sure (and Fantagraphics does publish manga, but don't have the breadth of localized Japanese works that Udon does). I was just thinking that, on the US end of things, those two publishers already have long-established relationships with the Schulz estate and/or Peanuts IP holders.

Wonder if the manga will touch upon the icky part of his life, such as when he was, in his 50s, dating a 25 year old woman while still married. I visited the museum in Santa Rosa, CA several years ago, and the museum acknowledged the affair and mentioned that it was occurring while his wife was undergoing cancer treatments.
