So after I'm the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire this is the second new anime of Spring 2025 that I've tried, and so far, neither of them were homeruns, but I'm keeping both of them on my anime calendar.
I know I've written this before, but I don't know the name of the art style of medium grade, mass produced fantasy/isekai anime. Modular style? Prefab style? Whatever it is, it's instantly recognizable, to the point where I wonder if the anime are taking the same backgrounds and playing three card monte while switching them in and out of other anime. As soon as I see that style, I know that the anime isn't aimed at greatness, but I also know that it is aiming for comfortable, familiar enjoyability, and that has its place. I'm not one of those who sneer at such plebian, derivative sludge. In the first episode, I think this anime succeeded in that modest goal. This anime starts out as the latest version of the recently popular "Kicked out of the hero party" genre. The hero party is made up of arrogant scumbags, as per uze, but at least it doesn't look like the MC is going to be forming his own party and wind up becoming the most powerful adventurer of all (fingers crossed) so there might be a few deviations from formula. The first episode has already been different from Although I'm blah blah Weakest Appraisal Class and I Left My A-Rank Party and The Banished Healer Has a Lot More Words in the Title but I Can't Remember Them only one of whIch managed to keep me around for 12 episodes. This anime could become what I was hoping Possibly the Greatest Alchemist would be: a familiar fantasy world conforming to RPG gaming standards, but focusing on lifestyle players instead of fighters. So far, this MC might be a crafting monster, but at least he doesn't wave his hands three times and Abra Cadabra! He's invented a magical refrigerator! I just name dropped a lot of mediocre anime references, but I think the "Kicked out of the Party" shows this most reminds me of are my anime fave Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town and the less succesful Beast Master. Like the MC from those anime, Kurt comes from some mysterious village where his insane gift is considered normal if not subpar. And like the MC from those anime, Kurt is a naive, nice guy with no real understanding of how special he is. But unlike those anime, it at least looks like Kurt is going to be using his craft powers to be a real support player instead of becoming just another monster slayer. I hope so anyhow. That would be a bit fresh. A real town building, potion making, lifestyle enhancing MC, not the magic poof machine we got from Possibly the Greatest Alchemist. Although who knows, maybe the MC is going to make a magic mecha. In any case, I enjoyed watching the first episode. |

I liked this. By the way, Edjwald, in the past I've used the phrase Animu Generica to describe the derivative look that non-top-tier fantasy shows like this use, but I'm considering replacing it with the label Bog Standard. Anyway, with DanMachi 5 recently ended, I'm glad that Bell Crandel has found work in a new series. Word on the street was that Takumi Iruma from Possibly the Greatest Alchemist of All Time was also up for the role of Kurt, but he decided that having just played a boyish, white-haired alchemist who makes stuff, it probably wasn't a great idea to play a boyish, white-haired atelier who makes stuff because he didn't want to get typecast. In any case, it's obvious ladies in fantasy shows lurvs them some boyish, white-haired dudes so Kurt's dance card is going to be pretty full, lucky dog. If one of these "kicked out of the heroes party despite having some killah hidden skills" shows wanted to be wildly different, they could veer from the heroes always being a-holes. For example, in this case, the other three party members could have said, "Sorry, Kurt, you've been a big help to us on the chores front, but this show has an arbitrary rule that only 4 people can be in a party and we need to a big time mage to get to the next level. However, here's a generous severance bonus and a glowing letter of recommendation." But no. |

Yeah, I liked it too. It reminded me of I Parry Everything, except the mc is a floofy Pomeranian instead of a goofy St. Bernard. And none of the women so far have been introduced boobs first, which is refreshing. I also didn't really get why his party seemed to enjoy crushing him, since they didn't really seem to be angry with his lack of fighting prowess or to otherwise actively dislike him. Yet they were acting like there was some long-held grudge they were finally getting to express with relish. Weird.
It'll be interesting learning more about the village he came from. |

@Blood - That would be a nice change of pace. One of the most enjoyable things about that Ossan Rookie Adventurer anime was how the SS class party was actually really supportive of the MC even though they put him through hell. Flipping the douchebag dynamic on its head really worked there.
For a second, when the SS party gathered right after the fight, I thought the nimble ranger was going to apologetically tell Kurt that he was a great kid, but that it was getting too dangerous for them to keep dragging him around into monster battles where he could get one shotted. But nope, a second later she started spewing the typical sociopath lines. Also, I made it sound like Lloyd from What if a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies had been kicked out of a party by pairing him with Beast Master. Lloyd wasn't, though he was a naive guy from a mysterious village with some mad abilities. |

@Gina It would be cool if that got developed. In What if a Kid From the Last Dungeon Etc the town was Kun Lun and it turned out to be a pretty awesome plot point. In Beast Master, the town had been destroyed by the demon kng.

It truly seems like the era of the overpowered crafter/cook/merchant is upon us. Sure, we still get isekai with op combat focused mc's but the balance has changed and I am all for it. The first episode was charming and while nothing special it seems like a solid watch. A large part of the fun will likely be seeing Kurt do increasingly crazy stuff. I also fully expect him to be able to kill monsters later on simply due to the insane gear he will craft (given the episode I think that he has SSS in all crafting/trade stats).

I enjoyed the first episode too. He does look like a nice guy, and I got a chuckle when the women said he was cute, even that he could make it as a companion. And that he was honestly rizzing up his new employer by saying she was pretty, that it was not nearly as awkward as some examples.
I think that I do agree on being a little tired of sociopathic hero parties from this new genre of OP characters being kicked out parties. I do think it must land some amount on a lot of RPGs you see players maximising efficiency in ways that ignore the human element. Which I do think is personally baffling as I tend personally to like to play to share attention out to all party members. My own experience in games isn't really to cut party members out. |

I agree with Gina. Kurt does reminds me a lot of Noor from I Parry Everything. I liked the dog reference. Hit the nail on the head.

As others have mentioned, Kurt is pretty much Noor from Parry. In fact, I would give this show the nickname, "I Alchemize Everything." It sucks Kurt's original group were such a-holes. Although, things seem to be looking up for him after his banishment. I suspect his adventures will be less "wow-y" as Greatest Alchemist, but with "funny cool" results like Parry. I wonder if he'll show case some ingenuity, since he's a builder. Very good start to the Spring season, so far.

Episode 2
Mr. Amazing continues to be amazing. I dunno how much patience I'm going to have with this OPness especially when it is coupled with his bizarre unawareness of how amazing his abilities are. At least with Greatest Alchemist, he knew what he was making was unusual. It's a pretty benign show so that can carry me a certain distance but I'm not convinced that this is a keeper, yet. |

I'm digging it, but it's not like I'm mistaking it for anything earth shattering. The reason I like it might be partly because we haven't really seen how Kurt is excavating these mining tunnels or fixing up these massive walls or setting up log cabins from scratch. If he's just waving his hands and presto, I'll be officially disgruntled.
I'll give the anime props for playing out the fate of the party that kicked Kurt out in one episode instead of dragging through the same old tropes that usually play out over 5 or 6 episodes. Maybe the asswipe party leader will still make a deal with some devil or schemer in order to get revenge, but at least it will be sooner. And I'll give out another prop for having one of the party members possess their own agenda, being completely aware of how awesome the MC is. Looks like Bandana has been arranging things to keep Kurt's identity under wraps and his delusions intact while steering him in useful directions. At the least, that's a twist I don't think I've seen in any of the other "Kicked out" MC anime. And I'm getting more and more curious about Kurt's village. Where'd the guy come from? Folkvangr? <--Valhalla for farmers and crafts types. |

Yeah, the mix of the mc just having fun while not realizing how crazy OP he is and a lot of stuff happening in the background is amusing. The latter has quite a lot going on such as the conspiracy to take the third princess out and Bandana trying to steer Kurt out of harm's way while making use of his abilities. With the meeting at the end I assume that the ladies will team up to have Kurt start an atelier since he will be discovered sooner or later otherwise.
Kurt's village is probably Kunlun for crafters. |

Yeah, I don't get Bananarama's deal at all. In the first ep, she seemed to really be enjoying the cruelty of how they kicked him to the curb, but now she's steering him to a sweet deal with Ophelia, but twirling her
"Back home, there was so much of this mithril crap everywhere we just threw it out." So why isn't her first question/job for him "Where's home" and "Take me there." Can he come to my house to clean up? |
