Man, I cannot imagine this actually being good. I'm still gonna watch an episode or few to view the trainwreck, but between it being a continuation of the most recent game of the series (which already has a kind of nutso plot), utilizing what seems to be the in-game engine for the animation, and seeming to shoe-horn entirely too many characters in...yeah, I don't hold out much hope.

Is this the show that's gonna be making me yell out "Guilty!" as my new catchphrase???

Going by the trailer, at least, it'll likely have a much simpler plot than any of the games after X. The line about Unika not working alone may mean it'll have more at some point, but since Ishiwatari doesn't seem to be too involved, I guess that'll depend on Kaiho. And the animation (probably) isn't done with UE4, Sanzigen is just imitating the game's visual style. |

Well, that makes for my first drop of the season. That is not to say that I think it is bad though, it is just very much not for me. Part of that is not being fond of how it looks but even more so not having knowledge about the games and the show clearly being aimed at fans of Guilty Gear. The basics are made somewhat clear but it is indeed a continuation of the most recent game and it expects you to have played it.

Episode 1
Welp, I get to add to my collection of hilarious English names from Japanese entertainment: Sol Badguy. Ironically, he isn't. Yeah, this strikes me as a bit of a mess but on the other hand it has a certain slick cheesiness that I don't hate. I'll watch some more and see. |

Oh, Guilty Gear is full of interesting names.
There are a few connections I'm surprised weren't mentioned. I guess its because the writers really want to focus on fans over newer audiences. I...kinda agree with the call, tbh. Especially remembering the awful Northern War anime a few years back- that one couldn't decide on the intended audience, and suffered for it. The visual are cheaper than I had hoped. Ah well. |

I tried playing Strive and found it a little too difficult to play casually. Most of my knowledge of the franchise mostly involves meme, with them generally involving Bridget, Testament and Baiken.
The animation style looks a little rough, but I do feel a little compelled to try and continue on to consume a part of the franchise outside of memes. |

I don't have a video game connection to enhance the experience. Trying to watch this anime was like one of those blind dates where you know it's not going to work out five minutes in.

I am not a gamer, so this is my first expirence with Guilty Gear.
Honestly its my favorite new series of the season so far. I found the story surpsingly easy to follow as a newcomers, and the action was cool. I doubt I'll become a gamer, so thus far I'm just enjoying this season. |

I was a casual fighting game player years ago and always wanted to get into this franchise, but got so busy with life, I haven't had as much time to game. The presentation in these titles always looked really stylish, and the only Ark System Works game I've played is Dragon Ball Fighterz, which is freakin' awesome in itself. I plan on eventually getting Strive for PS5 at some point.
For a fighting game turned anime, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from the show. But I'm actually liking it, so far. There are lots of characters with very outlandishly distinct designs, enough lore to keep me curious, and the action sequences feel a lot like what I see in the games. |

Welp, Dual Rulers has now ended- I'm kinda surprised. Thought it was going to get a full 12-episode count.
It's definitely made for preexisting fans, rather than new arrivals. I still think that's probably the right call- the lore of Guilty Gear is both outlandish and dense, so trying to cater to new folks, to help them make sense of wtf is going on, would have crashed the pacing. And man, that pacing was greased lightning. Maybe 1 episode actually stopped to let characters breathe- everything else was go-go-go. Fight scenes often looked good to me, but not always. I definitely felt the budget was somewhat unevenly allocated in that manner. I enjoyed it, though its hardly the best thing airing. But, as noted, its really for preexisting fans- this is probably not the best entry point into the franchise. |
