Tamala is easily the most interesting selection of these titles. The film just got its first US Blu-ray last year and I don't think a lot of people know about it when compared to the more popular films they're showcasing.

Whoa I didn't expect to see Criterion and anime in the same headline. That's probably the most unexpected thing I would see today.

I don't really touch paid streaming services anymore but it would be nice if this could lead to some Criterion BluRays of anime films that are either out of print or which never got a North American BluRay release in the first place. (I know there's the "boutique label tax" but most normal Criterion BluRays are cheaper in Canada than most Discotek releases due to lack of official Canadian distribution for the latter.)

I would LOVE to see Criterion dive seriously into older anime. There are so many wonderful films that would benifit from their approach

I think that time has mostly passed, honestly. Criterion definitely could have found themselves a cool niche in the post-00s bubble market, but that's since been filled by companies like Discotek, GKids, & Eleven Arts (while they existed), while Deaf Crocodile is now entering the market as well.
Sure, there are still some anime movies that Criterion could technically put out themselves, but I'd argue that the vast majority of the truly major & notable ones have already been given that special treatment.

For the record they had Paprika and IIRC some other Satoshi Kon films.

Didn't 11 arts also release anime made by a cult known as Happy Science & have Tom Kenny (voice of spongebob) as 1 of the VAs

Yeah, Eleven Arts did distribute a few of their films in North America. Though their latest release was distributed by a new company called Freestyle Digital Media.

Yes, I'm already aware of that for a while. But seeing Criterion doing anime today including having several anime titles made available on their streaming service may surprised newer anime fans, or anime fans that didn't know about Criterion previously released Akira on laserdisc (I mean laserdisc couldn't beat VHS back in the 80's and 90's prior to DVDs and Blu-rays today). I mean after releasing Criterion releasing Akira on LD, and before this particular announcement, Criterion has never touched anime until now.

Did some research & based on the stuff FDM seem to publish just about anything. I'm considering making a short movie involving stick figures & seeing if it goes through just to test their application process
