Saw the X-Wing mechamusume or whatever the hell that abomination was supposed to be and had to let out a legitimate groan. I mean, who the hell are they making this for? Can't be for Star Wars fans, everyone I know of hated the first season (and they'll only hate this more). Is it for anime fans? Is Star Wars even popular in Japan?

I believe the Original Star Wars Trilogy was a huge hit in Japan and it was popular among science fiction otaku, there were SW references in Gainax's first works like the original Daicon III & IV shorts, there was a Return of the Jedi parody in the original Urusei Yatsura anime, Yoshiyuki Tomino said he wanted the original Gundam to be all white like a Stormtrooper, and if we talk more "recent" references, the opening for Princess Jellyfish includes a Star Wars homage.
Now, I believe the Star Wars prequels performed well in Japan, I remember Akira Toriyama made a drawing of young Anakin to promote the movie and Return of the Sith still hold the record for the biggest opening day for a movie in Japan. In regards to the Sequel Trilogy, I think they did okay in Japan, but nothing spectacular, but that's because, save for some exceptions, Hollywood movies aren't that popular anymore in Japan.

As a Star Wars fan myself, this kind of "let creators make whatever they want from our toy box, adherence to canon/lore/tone be damned" is exactly what I want and I wish more franchises allowed it. The main canon is still going to be right there where we left it, none the worse for the existence of these shorts.

What did they think of the second season? Or did the Aardman short put them off further?
I do know that Disney's been crapping the bed with most of their Star Wars media these days. Skeleton Crew, Bad Batch, Obi-Wan, Mando S3/Book of Boba Fett. I think Andor's the only one anyone gives any time of day to.

I will be honest, is kind of needed because SW canon is rather strict. This simply allows them to create without the baggage of keeping to the canon and lore. Star Wars needs that, it needs to keep cultivating ideas to keep it going.

It looks better than anything Disney's made. I'd say just give Japan the Star Wars license at this point. Outside the wonky CGI one which is probably Polygon Pictures' entry they all look interesting.
