Wait, you're telling me that we could've had a Matrix video game done by Hideo Kojima. That would've been kind of cool if Konami didn't downright rejected the idea.

Bergstresser's story sounds completely made up, why would the VP of Licensing even be at this meeting with the Wachowskis at a different office

We got Metal Gear Solid 2 instead, I'd argue we're in a better timeline. I'll take one of the best sequels over a licensed title any day.

As much as I loved Metal Gear Solid 2, and I agree we're in a correct timeline. But I still would've liked to see how a Hideo Kojima's Matrix game would've been like, it could've been very good (maybe?). One does wonder.

This might be one of the most tragic missed opportunities in gaming history. Granted, I wouldn't trade MGS2 or 3 or 4 for a Kojima-helmed Matrix game, but it would have been amazing. Definitely too late now, lol.
And I know The Matrix Resurrections gets a lot of hate. You just gotta remember that if Lana hadn't put a bullet in the franchise herself (and I maintain that was a deliberate choice on her part), WB would have bled it dry and then beat the corpse into dust. Do you really want to live in the timeline where Matrix 4 was good and we got inundated with Matrix NFTs? A mobile gacha game with AI generated content?
But maybe it's not too late for the Wachowskis to make a Snatcher movie...

According to Kojima:
"In the morning, we had a Famitsu interview in Shinjuku — that time, Geof Darrow joined us for the talk session. In the afternoon, they were invited to the headquarters of KONAMI’s CS Division. Back then, I was Vice President of KCE JAPAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary. When I arrived at the headquarters, their meeting with Mr. Kitaue, the head of the CS Division, had just ended. I joined them afterward, and we chatted for about an hour without an interpreter (Aki wasn’t even there)."

Yes, I read the article, he specifically says nothing about Bergstresser being there (while refuting that Aki Saito was there either) which was my point

Good Guy Konami protecting Kojima from falling into the licensed shovelware pit and focusing him on MGS2 and 3 instead.

In the original Japanese, Hideo Kojima's statement makes clear that he was specifically talking about interpreter Aki Saitō not being there for his informal chat after the formal meeting, but he did not say that Saitō was not there before the chat.

The one thing I'll say is just theorizing a world where Kojima took the Matrix gig, maybe there's a chance that MGS2 could have been delayed long enough to rework the ending (specifically the part where Arsenal Gear crashes into NYC, which had to be cut after 9/11)

You say that like there's not a chance they will still find a way to bleed The Matrix dry.

There hadn’t been any new Matrix material since Revolutions. Not to mention WB could easily remake or reboot the property in a few years so nothing was achieved here.

We out here pretending that Konami wasn’t or ever put out shovelware even during their “we care about games” period?
