The fact that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond managed to chart in the Top 10 is actually pretty nice for a series that has never been popular there, but Metroid has had better debuts in Japan with other entries, though I think none of them managed to sell over 100k copies.
In terms of hardware, on the other hand, the Switch 2 is doing incredible numbers, while it seems that the new PS5 price cut did not succeed in generating interest in the console.

Unless it’s going to drop lower I don’t see it doing much.

Not surprising Prime 4 didn't do well, Prime's never done well in Japan. Dread did much better when it came out a few years back. I'm in the same boat of much preferring 2D Metroid over the FPS entries so I'll be skipping it too. I hope we get another sprite based 2D Metroid like Super, Fusion, or Zero Mission sometime but there's also a ton of games like those nowadays that there's not much shortage anymore like there used to be. Still, an official Metroid that plays like Astalon or something would be cool.

Don't know if it would be possible for Nintendo to make a new 2D/sprite-based Metroid game, the best option they have is developing a new 2D Metroid with polygonal graphics like how they did it with Samus Returns and Dread, I'd say that the best option they have is letting the developers of the 2D games I mentioned above to remake Super Metroid for the Switch 2.
