It really is a fascinating renaissance the series is having right now. And yeah, while Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is probably the best entry point, it’s also pretty unusual by the standards of the series. Unless Romancing SaGa 3 gets a similar remake to 2, Minstrel Song is one of the better ways to discover the most common format the series follows.
I like SaGa Frontier a lot, but it bounces a lot of people off by being a little too inscrutable in terms of the setting, it never really makes it clear what each of these locations are in relation to each other.

I like most of the SaGa games I've played (and I've played a few), and this is the one I have the most ambivalent relationship with. Honestly, its the last one I would recommend as a starting point in the series- while most of the games are characterized by inscrutable systems, this is the one that toes closest to being outright malicious. Event ranks are the best example, outright punishing the player for...playing the game. Forging and refining gear, the combo system (try the Dragon Knight boss without a guide,) classes, deity affinity and more...these systems range from player unconcerned to outright player unfriendly. And while challenge is good, I would argue that this is the wrong sort of challenge- when you feel stuck and you don't know how you got to that point or what to do about it.
And yet. While the graphics aren't good, the visual identity is strong. The soundtrack ranges from solid to impeccable. And once you begin to understand the systems, and figure out what is going on, it becomes almost addictive to plan out and execute a strategy for how to move through the game.
I don't love it, and its hard for me to recommend. But there's not much quite like it, and for a certain kind of player, it may scratch an itch that nothing else can.
