Holy moly, who hurt Jeremy Tauber?
I know I've probably ragged on the takes of reviews on ANN a bit too often, but even given that, it's been a long time since I've seen an ANN review this unnecessarily vitriolic.
Needless to say, I completely disagree with basically everything in this review, and some of the statements made border on utterly absurd. Confused
Bro just really wishes he was watching Cardcaptor Sakura instead, I guess. (Seriously, Lily doesn't look anything like Sakura or Tomoyo. I don't understand the reviewer's perspective at all...??)

Anyway, Cultural Exchange With a Game Centre Girl was a real highlight of my summer, so if anyone's interested in it, I definitely urge you to check it out. It's a very cute, fun series!

I'm surprised that they didn't try and find a British, or even American, Australian, Canadian etc actress, to play the main character. They got an American actor for Kabanaria of the iron Fortress and Night Raid 1931.

kind of reminds me of the mario party jamboree review from eurogamer. i'm in the same field that i really enjoyed the show as well, so i definitely second your opinion.

At least from what Sally Amaki said on the Trash Taste podcast, the British accent thing was a pretty late decision, as in the casting was already done, and she otherwise would have done the English lines in an American accent. I'm guessing nobody on the other side of the booth could tell if it was good or not.

The English dub version does try to deal with how everyone is audibly speaking English by having the Japanese characters use deliberately bad Bri'ish when the character attempts English. It kind of leaves things feeling all over the place, but at least they tried to do something with it.

Sally Amaki is American.

I've seen many series use (faux) accents to accentuate different Japanese dialects to varied effect (Hokkaido Gals given Minnesota accents stood out). It can be pretty muddled when they have to dub English speaking characters and/or have to display the language barriers between them and the protagonists. K-On's British special comes to mind, as much as I've tried to forget that series as a whole (YMMV).

Once again, i am still curious if and how Okitsura could work with an English dub. Out of morbid curiosity, I want to see this happen. Could be a unique experience or a dumpster fire; either way, I'll be entertained.

Yes, all the pre/early season fuss and (technically incorrect) accusations of pedophilia promotion/pandering turned out to much ado about nothing, and it is good to see that the review acknowledges that there was nothing problematic there.

As for everything else, a dictionary of contemporary American slang could have this show under the definition of "mid". Nothing terrible, nothing great, nothing exciting (IMO, as always YMMV). Would neither recommend this nor tell anyone not to watch.

One of my favorites of the year. I would love another season of this one for sure.

I always just felt like Sally Amaki was doing what would probably read as a British accent to Japanese audiences' (who the show is intended for). It's not the most convincing accent but considering the type of English speaking JP audiences are used to...and also I thought it was funny when they worked in "Bloody Hell!" or other British Colloquialisms into the sub version.

As far as the JP speaking, by the time Lily starts speaking Japanese it's at a point where she's already been going to school in Japan and interacting with her classmates like Aoi so she's probably learned enough japanese by then to believably speak it. Her parents speaking Japanese even when alone is probably just for the sake of the parents' seiyuu (although it's funny how her mom is Minami "Mana H Fountainland" Tanaka).

Ultimately while it's not a show that set the world on fire it's one I found really cute and charming in its own way and the cast and the SoL aspect hit harder for me than it did for this reviewer. I just found Lily really cute, I enjoyed her dynamic with Renji and co., I enjoyed the other girls in the mix, and I just though it was fun!

I'm just surprised they didn't cast Sally Amaki in the dub since she was in Tomo-chan is a Girl and she speaks fluent English.

I'm also a bit surprised by the amount of spite in the review, but mostly because I don't think this anime deserves any kind of strong emotional response at all, by far the dullest thing I've watched this year, entertainment equivalent of eating unseasoned hard-boiled chicken breasts.

I guess they wanted Lily to be "Foreign, but not too foreign (that would require a lot of effort and money)".

It's cool how they had Shu Uchida play an Australian since she actually lived in Australia. Apparently she and Sally Amaki became fast friends through meeting on this anime.

No offense, but every time I see a thread for an anime that got a hugely negative review, a lot of y'all can't seem to handle that yes, some folks hate anime lol.

"they didn't need to be that harsh"

idk man, with the fact that we are getting like...60 shows every three months, I think it's okay to be more...critical about the shows in question if they don't live up to their premise.

It's fine if you like it, but woof, some of y'all are so apologetic to crap.

I can only speak for myself, but it's not like I make such responses because I can't handle someone "hating anime". Rather, isn't it natural to assume anyone reviewing material on Anime News Network dot com would have at least some appreciation for the medium?
Even if I feel a reviewer had a baffling reaction to a show doesn't mean I should start assuming they hate anime. That's silly, lol.

This is such a dismal POV, man... The quantity of anime that exists should have no bearing on what any individual show means to you and your experience with it.
I don't watch every show each season (because honestly what stable human being could? lol), so I'm selective about what I watch, and when I find stuff among them that I particularly enjoy, I'm appreciative of that.
This particular series I found rather pleasant and enjoyable, but even putting that aside I'm not bothered solely due to the review being critical of it, but rather that the content of the review felt strange in itself, like a jarring contrast to my own experience with the show.
Sometimes even if I enjoy a show I can understand where someone else is coming from if they explain why they didn't. But I only commented because this was a case where I couldn't understand or empathize with the reviewer's feelings.

Putting aside everything else I said, I feel like you tossed away whatever point you were trying to make by ending your post with this condescending sentence. Anime smile + sweatdrop
