The inclusion of Hoppered was serviceable, and with this pacing and episode count it seems like a smart decision to just fold his resentment over Lost July in with making him Vash's caretaker during his general malaise. And he's a fitting mouthpiece for the "live to suffer" line if nothing else. After watching this and thinking more on the previous episode, it does feel like there has been an overall drop in animation quality compared to Stampede with some noticeable jerkiness this episode, though we will have to see if that persists - would be pretty catastrophic if so, since animation is the one thing Stampede had going for it

And I will say, now that we have the full story of Eriks' recovery the degree of hard retconning between Stampede and Stargaze is really funny. Lina, who's that?

Quote:
It's unclear to me if Hoppered already knew that “Eriks” was Vash or not

We had an extended scene of Hoppered contemplating slitting Vash's throat while shaving him, it's pretty clear Hoppered knew from the very start

Honestly, I didn't see the point of the first episode as it had nothing about Vash or exposition about what was Hopper. Instead the writers to solve everything in the second half of the second episode. It does have a sad feeling that Hopppered wants to be kill by Vash and that he was actually mentioning a woman taken during the July incident. A bit rushed but it does give more weight to the chaos Vash accidentally generated in July.

It may be too miserable even for Vash but I think Nightow or Madhouse were interested in showing the chaos the protagonist caused. Kinda like how Vinland Saga kept showing Thorfinn's sins even when he tried to get over his bloody Viking past but karma wants to bite him even if it means ruining his future.

Just like Stampede I am liking the mix of the manga and '98 anime so far. It makes sense to give Hoppered the role of "Eriks" caregiver with such a short episode count and lots of stuff to get through. Plus, more backstory for the ultimate gang of baddies, the Gung-ho Guns, is super welcome. Still, an upcoming confrontation will, I hope, be quite similar to the manga, because it was always a favorite part. Even if not, I plan to take it with good grace.

After so many episodes where Vash is portrayed as a miserable individual, I'm glad what Stargaze finally gave him some happiness. The fact that being accompanied by friends moved Vash to tears was also moving to me.

I crapped out on Trigun Stampede. It just didn't catch me, and the reporter sidekick turned me off. I had no idea how it ended.

I've had no such issues with Stargaze. It grabbed me from the start. Milly's back. Enough backstory for me to get a grip on the tragedy and its aftereffects. Genius, absolute genius visuals. Yet more tragedy. Brilliant writing. I'm back in.

“Say what you like about CG in anime (and sometimes I do find the frame-skipped character movements distractingly jerky, I wish Orange wouldn't do this), but there's no way this scene could be portrayed so dynamically in hand-drawn animation.”

Okay first of all, I will say what I like about the CG style - it sucks and will always suck and will always be disappointingly distracting until they can open their eyes animate without the frame jumping bullshit. No idea why that continues to go on unchecked.

Secondly, this could have been totally portrayed even more dynamically with hand-drawn animation if the right animators were behind it. Watch Redline or first season of One punch man or something and I would say that saying it could only have been so dynamic with frame jumping CG is just false.

Episode 4 was really good, I enjoyed everything. Some things from the manga we've been waiting to see happen. And I don't care that it was a little different, I still felt feelings. Hey, Midvalley! Looking sweet in pinstripes, my dude! Midvalley the Hornfreak, Mister Sax and Violence. It's good to see him. Can't wait to see what develops with him in episode 5.

There's a reason for Vash's hair changing color in the manga that Stargaze will (probably) explain at some point.

I recall Nightow being asked in the manga but I think the characters just left it in a subtle fashion until the final chapters.

So we're almost halfway through the show and my main takeaway is that they could've waited to mention anything about the incoming earth fleet until the second half and literally nothing would have to change lol

While Wolfwood was artificially aged to adulthood, I am pretty sure the implication is that enough time has passed that he is also mentally an adult by the present day as well (so it's more like he's mentally in his early 20s but physically in his late 30s).

Feeling a mixture of sadness and frustration over these last few weeks over how much the bloom is off the rose. The scene of Elendira digging nails into Legato nicely encapsulates this show, in that it's a scene more of less lifted directly from the manga visually but without any understanding of what made the scene work in the original, coming across as a cheap copy that lessens the narrative impact (by having it be done by this terrible attempt at a "quirky" child Elendira with no meaningful connection to Legato) while also just looking bad on a technical level. It all feels like a team, knowing they're not given the time they need on this project, just throwing darts at a dartboard to pick random TriMax scenes to animate in an attempt to garner at least some fond nostalgia from the audience

And any hopes I had of the Earth fleet taking the story in any fresh directions are more or less dashed now, they're just a lame prop in the form of a ticking time bomb with zero agency of their own

I am surprised about Vash and Knives. They have a deep relationship enough to be together despite insane antagonism

the reason why the 98 anime did that was that the manga was still on going and the staff opted to do an anime original ending instead of waiting for the manga to finish, which is how some anime were back in the 90's they rarely if ever were faithful to the source materials and always used an original ending instead!

Good stuff this week, though I kinda wish I had waited so I could pair it with next week. As it is, it's all just set-up. However, they did adapt something that was a favorite moment of the manga, spoiler[namely Knives using his power to take out satellites.]
