Agents of the Four Seasons: Dance of Spring (TV) Source: Light Novel (ongoing @ 8 volumes, written by Kana Akatsuki, illustrated by Suoh) Demographic: Animation Studio: Wit Studio Genres: adventure, drama, fantasy, romance Themes: gods, mythology, sorcery Plot Summary: Winter was once the only season in the world-but such an existence was too lonely to bear, and so it created Spring to love. Before long, the earth wished for more time to rest in the cycle, and Summer and Autumn were born. The ones who carry the cycle are called the Agents of the Four Seasons. Hinagiku, the Agent of Spring, disappeared from this land ten years ago, taking the season of spring with her. Now, after incredible hardship, she has returned to restore the cycle to its proper state-and, as in the myth passed down since the dawn of time, she sends her love to Winter. Welp, I watched the first episode and I'm not sold on watching this one all the way to the end, but I'm not against the idea either.
The anime is very pretty to look at IMHO, and that's never a bad thing. I don't dislike the characters though it did take me a while to get used to Hinagiku's halting way of speaking, and the little brat with the sled annoyed me for a good bit. If they had just been wandering through the snow I would have found the kid sort of endearing, but the situation presented was that Hinagiku and her guard had apparently been lying low since a dangerous situation that erupted in violence. Now they were doing something covertly because there was apparently an element of danger to it, and I was half expecting a bullet hole to appear in Hinagiku's forehead just as the rite was about to be completed or something. Instead of being charmed, I was sitting there thinking take the kid with you or put her on the sled and kick it down the mountain and apologize later But that kind of tension isn't a bad thing. The question is whether winter or the agent of winter being some kind of edgelord stalker or whatever is going to be a compelling plotline or an annoying one that's heavier on drama than common sense. |

A bit of a tantrum on my part so feel free to ignore it but man does the end/start of a new season always annoy me. The reason for that is new shows starting while a fair amount still need to actually end. It always make for a weird week and a half or so where anime are both starting and ending simultaneously (I would like there to be a pause week between seasons).
Grumblings aside, your description makes it sound interesting Edjwald. |

Back in the day, that was in the norm for new shows to start the week after an old show ended, especially when a new show takes over the time slot of an old show. I wasn’t originally planning to watch this show, but after seeing the first episode, I plan on sticking around. |

Episode 1
Well, I dug it. It is pretty and it is different. I'm certainly not sitting here going, "zomg, not ANOTHER show where humans are agents for the four seasons!" I sense this show is going to be kicking me in the feels on a fairly regular basis. "She wants to... tell her mother... she loves her." Oh man, just rip out my heart, why dontcha? Anyway, yeah, I'm in. Good start to the Spring season... and highly appropriate, too! |

Its a very interesting premise, with solid animation.
The series was very advterised across Social Media , and I'm glad to be checking it out. It's a neat mixed of genre from Fantasy to almost Sci Fi style action, plus the characters are quite interesting (I'm still thinking as to who will become my favorite). |

As far as the mix thing goes, the main reason I'm not singing prthe show's praises to the rafters is that I'm having a hard time parsing out the motivations of the characters and the internal logic of the world and I'm still waiting to see how things develop.
Why are people trying to kill the avatars? What does the organization seem so hellbent on making things unpleasant for them? Why are the agents so passive? The agent of winter was unleashing some pretty impressive powers when attacked. The strange powerful-but-powerless thing is a little odd. Could the avatars unleash wind and lightning and piercing roots and things like that? Could they cause tornados or blizzards if their emotional state got messed up? Because all of them seem like they could use some counseling. Episode 3 started out funny, turned dramatic, then became a thriller. It wasn't bad, but it seemed a bit uneven. That said, it was pretty good at doing all of those things. I like the characters as presented even if I'm constantly having the urge to try to reach a hand through the screen and give Hinagiku a glass of water. And the show is so pretty, I think I'll watch it all the way to the end even if I get so frustrated with the plot that I turn the subtitles off. |

It took me awhile to warm up to this one, but I've quit running alongside the train and jumped on to the freight car now.
I liked the summer sisters. The show is still soaked in sadness and poignance, and I'm still not sure that a lot of it couldn't be avoided if the author didn't seem to want to let the characters season (no pun intended) in that stew so much. But the anime has enough action and humor to keep me from getting frustrated, and now that I'm invested in the characters, I'm looking forward to watching it instead of halfway forcing myself. I got the question about whether Hinagiku could summon roots and such to kick some "assistance" too. The motivations of the people who keep attacking the agents still seem murky and irrational, but I guess just because its fiction doesn't mean it can't have violent groups whose motives are just as murky and irrational as some in real life. |

I am both liking the show and getting annoyed by it. The latter mostly has to do with the show wanting to be sad. There is nothing wrong with delivering a show made to make you feel things but here it is set up to be never ending with the show asking you every five minutes if you are feeling something yet. At some point the sadness indeed feels a bit cheap in how they are overusing it. It is a shame because I love the concept, the lovely animation and many of the characters. When the show is not trying to make you feel sad it is both fun and interesting. I am curious about those insurgents and if they truly are a group without a motive plus those seasonal villages sound interesting too. |

I think that episode 7 did not hear you either. Gosh darn that ending hit like a gut punch. The episode somehow made me put my guard down, I think at making it look like the Autumn compound was so secure that they were going overboard with things like what looked like a constructed reality and bullet proof glass. And then they drop a missile on it. She shockingly survived thanks to autumn magic, but Nadeshiko is going to go through the same thing that Hinagiku did. I am going to hope there is going to be a stronger response this time to make sure she is saved. But... seeing a kid being bombed. That unfortunately feels way too topical for a world that has had that on the news. |

It also raises a few questions as to how the insurgents are so well armed and informed. Where is all the money their operation costs coming from? Surely it has to be a case of part of the government of Japan or possible other countries being involved.

The show is making it pretty hard to be a fan of it. Following last week's unexpected and hard hitting end I was rather curious as to what would happen next. The answer is a flashback episode that covers a lot of what we already know just to twist the knife a little more. I have complained about the show going too hard with the drama but this week it felt actually cheap. |
