I know it's not fair to judge those misunderstandings, since they happened almost 30 years ago, but it’s interesting to see how people reacted to misinformation or vague rumors and announcements back then, kind of reminds me of those old Dragon Ball AF rumors like, "I have a cousin who went to Japan and he said he saw a new Dragon Ball anime in which Goku became a Super Saiyan Level 7" though I saw some videos about Usenet posts, mainly from alt.tv.simpsons, posting tons of fake information about new episodes, I think the modern equivalent would be people posting rumors or fake leaks to get a reaction or attention. Still, the idea of remaking an entire show for its International distribution sounded weird even back then, and considering that people claimed that Evangelion had a very limited budget (which is something that I recently discovered it wasn't true) it made even less sense.
Regarding some of the (in)famous moments in the last couple of episodes of Evangelion, I never had problems with the elevator scene (I though it was funny), though I do agree that the scene with the Rei clones was actually disturbing, as for the violence, I also thought it was pretty graphic, which is kind of weird considering that many years before I watch NGE I had already seen other violent and uncensored anime like Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya and B't X, though I believe what makes it scarier in Evangelion is the way in which Anno handled it, he made it look distubing.
I've heard a lot of times that Anno had always had issues with depression, but man, it seems things sadly haven't changed in 30 years with all of those negative and violent comments directed towards him, no wonder why so many mangaka try to hide their real identities. And this also affects artists and creators outside of Japan

Imho, for me it was the case that it was about "normal people" getting the violence, the other series you mention were about fighters and martial arts, so violence was not expected. This is exacerbated by the fact that most of the mech series we got in america (continent) err very sanitized, so even if the contest was mecha "war" it still was unexpected.
I guess for a more modern anime fan, it's like the violence school days.
I am old, I was there, as a teen. It's fun remembering that back then the community already had guys older than I am now.

Honestly, while Evangelion can get really creepy sometimes, it feels Anno wanted to show something even more violent in the End of Evangelion. Not only Asuka's death was disturbing to see but we get to see the end of the world in one of the most violent insert songs sever. I recall a certain artist commenting on the movie wondering "Does Anno even like his characters?"
