The way I snatched this up within an hour of its announcement...this is a crucial piece of manga history, and for so long I never thought it'd see the light of day in English. I hope this is a success, and that Mangalith looks into more classic shojo.

I'm about to order my own copy here. I feel like I had recently requested Fire! in another publisher's licensing survey, so it's surreal to see this announcement. Surreal, but awesome!
I too would love to see more classic shoujo in English. We've been getting a lot of localizations these days of important classic shounen and gekiga that would've been pipe dreams fifteen or more years ago, but shoujo has been underrepresented.

Very excited to see it licensed! Will definitely be preordering it soon.
But wow, 900 pages for a softcover is gonna be chunky. The biggest omnis I have are only around 600-650
|

Oo! I am beyond excited for this release. Never thought we'd see it in English. I'll be getting a copy ASAP, and wish this new imprint all the luck in the world if this is the caliber of title they'll bring us.

The closest equivalent in English manga releases right now would probably be the complete omnibus release of Dororo by Vertical/Kodansha, which is listed as 848 pages & is also softcover. I also have all but one of the Ohta Publishing's omnibuses for Team Astro from 1999 in Japan, which are all 700+ pages in softcover.
Yeah, they're all chunky.

A Drifting Live by Yoshihiro Tatsumi is 855 pages and The Osamu Tezuka Story by Toshio Ban is 914 pages, both softcovers and horrible to read if you want to keep the spine uncracked. While I love these manga seeing an English release, I really hope they go for hardcover more often in the future. The target audience is adults anyway, so we have a bit more money to spend on these kind of things, so going for the hardcover is not that risky of a bet imo.

My Paradise Kiss 20th anniversary omnibus (also Vertical/Kodansha) is 858, and I have to be careful with it because the spine has trouble holding all the pages. I have heard from a few folks that Uncivilized's quality tends to be quite good, considering they're a boutique publisher, so I feel it'll be decently sturdy. Hardcover would've been nice, but pricey considering how small the pub is.

This is really great news and I look forward to placing a pre-order. I wonder if the two short stories are included in the large one volume release. I hope this is very successful and Mangalith will consider a hardcover limited edition in the future.

My Team Astro books are from 1999, and were bought secondhand, & their spines have all held up rather well, so I guess it really just comes down to how they're made. We can only hope that Mangalith knows what they're doing & making a quality softcover spine for all of those pages.
