I read the ANN review of the first disc, and it sounded like a wonderfull series. After having watched it all, I think I will buy it as it comes out, because it was pretty good, which is suprising for me because I generally cannot stand shows revolving around ecchi fanservice.
Actually, curiously enough, I was a bit dissapointed by a lack of raunchiness that I had expected after reading a bit about it. Actually what I was looking for going in was a show that dealt with much more real high school issues that girls face, which it does to some extent. The scene where the two girls are in the bathroom discussing differences between their vaginas and how ti effects the way they pee was quite good. While most girls I know probably wouldnt have talked about such issues so blatantly, or at the very least would not have SHOWN each other how to do it, this is actually a real issue that most girls (from my experiance) are actually curious and insecure about. I kind of wish there had been more scenes like that. Actually, it could have used some scenes with blatent full frontal nudity and have the girls discussing differences in nipple sizes and such what. The point is that I expected a really riske look at some serious issues that girls actually face while going through puberty. Should I use pads or tampons? How can I deal with harsh menstrul cramps? Why are my breasts different then other girls? Should I start shaving my genitals? Is my vagina normal looking? Is my body weight okay? Or should I diet? What is my sexuality, and why the sudden influx of hormones? While a lot of these subjects were touched on, it felt to me like it was very superficial, and a fetishy peek into the feminin world designed for guys, because guys want to think about these sorts of things about girls. Which is understandable, as it is, when you come down to it, an ecchi fanservice show made for a male audiance. I guess I was just dissapointed as to its lack of actually delving into these issues instead of just mentioning them in passing. But all in all, it was an entertaining enough show and I enjoyed it. Like I said, I will most likely buy it as it comes out. It will have the great priviledge of being the only ecchi girls high school show in my collection.
Does anyone know what the manga is like in comparison? Iv heard the anime is really toned down. |

My question is whether females are interested in the same kind of things about guys?

Yes actually, but I think I would have the same sort of qualms with a series that was made for girls and only sort of mentioned in passing such issues for men. Again, actually addressing the issues would be of far greater merit. |

Bought and watched this yesterday. EXTREME disappointment. I didn't expect much though and I realized the ANN review said it was fairly unimpressive so I got what I deserved. It was a lot worse than the ANN review made it sound, but I still got what I deserved for taking a chance on something that had iffy ratings to begin with. I think I'll be selling this used to Suncoast the first chance I get.
For one thing I thought it wasn't raunchy enough to be interesting, which is why I bought the show. I found the show extremely tame. Furthermore, I realize the ANN review said the animation quality was bad, but it was BAD. Essentially Girl's High feels like a hentai anime with no hentai in it. Not surprising considering it is produced by production company ARMS which primarily does or did hentai anime. But I figured that by now, and years after they did Elfen Lied (which also had the hentai anime feel but in general was a much better done show), ARMS might have become a real anime production quality. But after watching this I'll never buy another ARMS show again...they are just a bottom-basement gutter hentai anime studio, that for some reason thinks they can pull off a successful non-hentai anime (well, I guess maybe they did, with Elfen Lied, but I personally was not impressed by Elfen Lied). The music in this show is the worst ever, as the ANN review said. I can make better music than all the music in this show by hitting random notes on a keyboard and making farting noises at the same time. And I guess the worst thing is that this show feels like a hentai anime, without actually having anything really raunchy/funny/interesting in it. And I'm no girl so I can't say for sure, but I don't feel like this show caters to girls, after watching it. Too many ridiculous panty shots and garbage like that. I don't think girls want to see that so obviously and so often. The show feels to me like it is for guys, but really badly done. Not nice-looking enough to be worth watching, and not ranchy enough to be funny or interesting. The manga may be different. Since it has a female author I presume it is more geared for girls and probably more raunchy too. But the anime sucks, it probably lost everything that was good about the manga. This probably ranks among the worst purchases I've made in my life. >-/o |

But anyways, I guess that's enough bashing on this show, I might as well talk about it a little too.
What did people think about the scene where the girl was scarfing down rice with a raw egg and soy sauce in the train? I thought it was funny. Do people in Japan really do that? I also thought it was funny that she had a whole soy sauce bottle with her. Probably she should have had a soy sauce packet or something instead. I've seen lots of people eat similar things, like rice mixed with semi-raw egg and soy sauce, or boiled/fried eggs with soy sauce on top...but never quite the same thing that girl ate. |

Tamago kake gohan is a traditional Japanese breakfast dish that consists of rice, raw egg and soy sauce. Could that be what you are referring to? I've only seen one episode of this anime (simply wasn't my bowl of miso) so I'm not familiar with the scene in question. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamago_kake_gohan |

Yeah I guess it must be the same thing. The funny thing about it in the show though was the way the girl had hers. She opened up a square, silver box and inside was plain white rice and 1 whole egg (in the shell) smashed into the middle. She removed the egg, cracked it, and poured the insides into the indentation where she had originally smashed her egg into the rice. She also took a soy sauce container out of nowhere and poured a couple drops in (which is funny because I don't see how she could carry a soy sauce container like that onto the train, it should spill everywhere, I would have expected maybe a soy sauce packet or something). Then she just kinda started slobbering it all up and getting it all over her face. The whole thing was just kinda funny to me.

What gave you the idea that this show was serious about anything?
Well, I find the manga to be really funny, but I didn't care for the 3-4 episodes of the anime I saw. It's been a while since I read any of it, so I don't remember much about the content. I don't recall all those panty shots though. Sure, there was a bit here and there, but I don't remember it being so blatant and in-your-face. |

I think it was this bit from the review which gave me my expectations:

Girls High is beyond belief funny. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has little to no coherent story line and I didn't feel any resolution at the end. But I guess that's what you get when you watch a comedic anime.

Hey, I'm really interested in this series but am bummed out to hear the negativity... Is it really not worth the time? And as a guy, can I still appreciate it?

I'm a guy, have seen all of this anime, bought it on DVD a few days ago, and have enjoyed it. It's nothing that's going to blow you away but I found the anime to be humorous enough to get a good laugh out of it a few times an episode. But uh, I definitely can't see this anime being for everybody... Also, I wouldn't have minded if they went into more of the "girly" stuff that Eruanna brought up. Actually, that probably would have made it a lot more interesting...
That was my favorite song in the anime. I don't know why. I just don't hear farting used in music that often, (although I have, but all of it was American stuff, who are pretty keen on the bathroom humor, unlike the Japanese who seem a bit more refined...), especially in an anime about girls in high school... |

I checked out this show because the ANN review made it sound like some kind of girl-school version of PING PONG CLUB, and I too was disappointed that it wasn't as raunchy as the review led me to believe it was. Still I found it entertaining and funny enough, and since it's a short series I'll probably be getting all of it. The ED was pretty cool--I love it when anime characters dance.

I watched just the first episode of this on a Newtype sampler disc. It's kind of funny to see you guys asking if 'guys will enjoy this'... as a female, I can tell you this was NOT made with a female audience in mind!!! I was actually pretty disgusted with most of it (the panty-showing skirt chops, the pile of pubic hair in the swin club room, the lesbian oral innuendo, and so on.) Based on what you guys are saying happens later on, it doesn't improve (I know I personally have never been involved in, or overheard, a conversation about differences between vaginas.)
If you want to see something that talks about a female issue that is made for girls, read the chapter of Kaze Hikaru where the lead gets her first period. THAT I enjoyed. This strikes me as a 'let's think of all the gross, vulgar things girls might do and present it in a boys-toilet-humor/fanservice show.' Needless to say, my wallet is staying very, very far away from this. |

Thanks guys for all the info. Sorry to hear it's not a female version of Ping-Pong Club, that's what I was hoping for too.
Is there an anime you recommend that shows a fairly realistic but humorous female high school perspective? I'm looking for something like that. |
