Ah, so basically Patrica Lee is going to play the Live action Haruhi, at least for the U.S Bandai promos, or it might have been a one time thing.
Anyways, this clears it up for everyone who wasn't sure about how things will play out, and that there's basically no time table when Haruhi DVDs will be coming out or when it will start because they still don't have the local dub team to voice over the series (2007 isn't really telling us much). |

Well, that killed a number of doubts, but the three remaining questions are:
1. Will "psychics" be the term used to replace "esper" in the Haruhi dub? 2. Will the concert be dubbed, or will the dub actors suddenly appear to be signing Japanese? 3. Will Bandai assign out the dubbing to a post-production studio, like the much feared Bang Zoom! Entertainment? Or will they and Kadokawa oversee the dubbing personally? ... I think #2 is perhaps the most widespread question for the dub; we're in a unqiue situation in that actual actresses within the show's cast were singing the opening, ending, and middle (?) themes, not to mention how the song during the concert is integral to the plot. Frankly, I'd like to see the songs dubbed...even if people don't like 'em, they can just turn on the Japanese track to hear the original. |

I totally thought those were going to be the dub VAs for a while.
Does this mean Patricia Ja Lee will be busy to pursue other... "acting" offers? *readies Haruhi bunny suit*

Bandai doesn't have an in-house dub studio. The dubbing will be done by Bang Zoom!, New Generation Pictures, or another similar outside studio. -t |

Hehe, very good point, and I don't get why people still ask this question because if they don't like the dub song, they have a dvd remote and they can change the voices, and add subs on with a push of a button. They can even pause the dvd so that they can fumble with the controls to switch it before the song even starts. All I can see about that is that people have a hassle with it, and they don't want to spend precious seconds to use to manually switch voices/subtitles. But if someone is watching it dub or sub for the matter, they would like the language to be consistence, even if it's an important song. |

That news was technically incorrect, but it fundamentally describes the situation; Bandai is functioning as if it actually did have the rights to Haruhi, while Kadokawa is the true owner of the property. ... Hmm, someone mentioned in an earlier one of the "Haruhi series" topics (that is, the website topic, the announcement topic, and this correction one) that "Animaze" might be assigned the dubbing duties for this show. A quick check of the encyclopedia indicates they're the fellows behind GITS: SAC, so I would imagine them to be a good choice for managing the Haruhi dub. In contrast, we've got Bang Zoom! Entertainment who have handled a majority of other Bandai properties, and from the looks of their résumé they should be getting all the heat for Bandai's notorious "hit or miss" reputation; most of the shows considered to have "bad" dubs, or at least inappropriate casting, were under the watch of BZE. I cannot say I have much experience with Animaze, though; anyone care to share some knowledge regarding their dub quality beyond GITS: SAC? |

I was under the impression that Animaze and Bang Zoom! share some of their voice talent, judging by my discerning ear for voices in dubs. I've heard a lot of carry-overs from one to another, studio-wise. Either they're reaching into the same pool or this is a case of misunderstanding of the credits. Also, some VAs are under aliases, but nobody's supposed to mention that. |

Well, they're both based in California, I think, so they really *are* reaching into the same pool--IE, "Californian-voice-actors-who-audition-for-anime-roles-besides-Miyazaki".
Yeah, that's a union thing. You get kicked out of the actors union if you do un-unionized roles...but since the union has rules about the salaries voice actors should recieve, and many anime studios can't afford to pay the actors the salary they're supposed to...the actors just go by psuedonyms. Although, recently, a few video games have just not credited actors at all...I'm not sure if that's a union thing, or something else entirely. |

bang zoom and animaze are probably my two favorite studios, and i generally enjoy the dubs on most bandai titles
but these are my exceptions: galaxy angel - people sounded too old .hack//sign - people sounded too angsty scrapped princess - pacifica sounded too much like haruhara haruko they managed to make me watch adult swim only for the gits:sac dub; i'm going to keep my fingers crossed and hope for a really great adr and casting directors. over 90% of the people in my anime club always pick subs over dubs, but i still think you're going to run the risk of losing customers and staining a show's name with a bad dub. i know i won't watch a really bad haruhi dub on tv - no matter how much i love haruhi. this is just a general question...but how do you guys feel about crispin freeman, and how would you feel if he got cast in (or directed the dub for) haruhi? i've just been wondering how other feel people, because it seems like he's in almost everything nowadays (not to say that he's a bad actor - he's really awesome some times.) |

Yup. Bang Zoom, Animaze and New Generation Pictures....but then again, don't they more-or-less have the same pool of voice actors? Whatever. Those "pool" of voice actors are indeed the best English voice actors for anime shows. 1st place no doubt as they've already acclaimed "International-quality" for their voice work. These are even sent back to Japan (for the English-language channels) and to tons of other broadcasters worldwide. Indeed the best in this business. Then followed by either ADV Films or Funimation Studios (for either 2nd or 3rd place). Whichever it is. Those are your Top 3 English VA studios right there.

It would depend - can you picture (er, hear) Crispin Freeman as the voice of one of the characters in SHnY? I'd reccomend Kari Wahlgren for Haruhi and either Jason Spisak or Dave Wittenburg for Kyon. |

Actually, I can picture Freeman as the dub voice for Itsuki, no problem. And to address an earlier question, 'psychic' is basically the English word for the Japanese 'esper'. Consider the roots - a 'psychic' is a person gifted in the 'psyche' (mind), and an 'esper' is someone gifted with ESP - pretty much the same thing. If you aren't convinced, go through the series and mentally substitute 'psychic' for 'esper' every time it comes up, and see if it leads to any confusion. |
