Like the Hugo Awards, the nominees and winners of the Seiun Awards have expanded beyond science fiction. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and American Gods each won a Hugo Award for best novel. As the article notes, My Neighbor Totoro and Card Captor Sakura have won Seiun Awards. Smile

I like Buso, it just doesnt deserve any awards. They should've nominated Kenshin instead.

Although Rurouni Kenshin just ended in North America last year, it finished its publication in Japan in 1999. According to the Seiun Award regulations, the eligible works and creators must have been published between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year.

... if so, what's with YKK getting a guernsey? Didn't that finish eighteen-odd-months-ago?

Yokohama Shopping Log ended in the April 2006 issue of Monthly Afternoon after 140 installments, so it slides comfortably within the eligibility period.

I don't really think that Death Note has any real competition. If it DOESN'T win, something is wrong. I mean, one country away in South Korea, it is a cultural phenomenon. I believe it is the best-selling manga EVER in this country.

Cultural Phenomenon does not equal a good series. Death Note goes severely downhill in the second arc.

YKK should win. It's a masterpiece of a manga. If it doesn't win, then they're not judging on quality of a series.

Wow those manga nominees are...special. Bunsô Renkin isn't even really Sci-fi (let alone good). If YKK doesn't win this I'll be a sad, sad man.

It's spelled "Busô" (or more commonly Busou), not Bunsô, and it's pretty much science fiction, what with the fictitious science that plays this rather central role in the story.
Whether you personally like it is probably irrelevant for this award, but I do find it amusing how relatively many people feel the need to complain about its nomination. you know, instead of being happy that another series, one you like, got nominated.
YYK probably deserves victory, but I don't know two out of those five stories, so I'm not one to judge.

Well, I don't think it's merely a popularity contest either. Otherwise, it'd simply be a matter of numbers and just because many people are reading it at the moment doesn't mean that it's automatically good. Would you settle for "pop fiction" like Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code or would you rather read titles such as The Catcher in the Rye, Les Miserables, and Noli Me Tangere.

I think that works of art should be judged not only for the "impact" that they make but also the impression that they leave in minds of the readers/viewers/listeners/etc. Like other posters before me, I firmly believe that YKK is the most deserving not only for it's unorthodox style and content but also for the positive influence on anybody who takes the time and effort to fully appreciate it.
