I thought if it was 'The First', that you could get into it without watching the series. Oh, well.

I read a local anecdote online about a fan bringing her middle aged mom to watch this in cinema. The mom was perplexed by why her daughter wanted to see this so much. But nearing the end of the movie, the mom was cheering too.

To be fair, that match against Sanno was really that fun.

I think the reviewer is underestimating viewers unfamiliar with the series.

I only had a passing familiarity with the series, having seen an episode or two, while my girlfriend had absolutely no knowledge of it at all.

We both walked out the theater extremely impressed, after holding our breath for the entire buzzer beater ending.

Obviously those of us who haven't read or watched the other parts of the series are going to be less familiar with all the characters and their motivations, but that doesn't take away from the key points that are established within the film for Ryota. Maybe it's how the movie portrayed him versus how he is in the original series, but I didn't feel the need to see him make some big, star play either.

The only thing that struck me as a bit weak was getting to know the Sanno team. They show some bits about the members, but it wasn't quite enough to make them feel like a particularly interesting match up. I'm not sure if the manga ever goes that deep into the other teams though.

I get Ryota didn't get too much time to shine but the MVP of the match there was the selfdeclared Sakuragi

Hmmm. I guess this is how it is evaluated in the West, after all.
I think it is an innovative film, including all the animation, so my evaluation is quite different.

The movie wouldn't have exploded in popularity if the general audience didn't care, so the reviewer is definitely underestimating them and the word of mouth.

I saw a B- for this movie and I just am lost af for what these people consider an A. A lot of hella enteraining movies get the brunt of it for just trying to entertain people instead of sending a stupid message, which isnt even the point of an entertainment medium.

Sannoh vs Shohoku was the greatest match I ever witnessed in a sports manga and I can now finally extend it to the anime medium thanks to this movie. Such a stupendous movie. And I hope we get more of such works in the future.

If by West you mean the United States and Canada I guess so, but Slam Dunk was hugely popular in Latin America, the movie has just been released in Mexico and they managed to bring back the original dub voice actors for Hanamichi, Kaede, Yasuharu, Tetsushi, Satoru, Toki, Satoro, Yohei, Yuji and Norio. Takehito Inoue even tweeted a congratulations message to all the fans in Mexico.
As far as the movie goes, I think Toei does a great job in regards to CG animation

Interesting to read this review here considering most "mainstream" review in the west so far now that its released in theater here has been extremely positive and most actually said the background of the manga/anime is not a prerequisite for its enjoyment.

I just came back from this movie and I have never seen the anime series but have read the entire manga probably 26 years ago, and only thing I did was to look up the names of the character(I read it back then in Mandarin volumes, so I knew the characters names in kanji and read in Chinese, but not how their names are pronounced in romaji). I enjoyed the film very much, both just a damn good anime experience(the CG somehow made it feels actually like watching the pages of the manga comes to life, rather than a version of how the manga looks as animation) and still very nostalgic.

I went into this completely blind (I've seen volumes of Slam Dunk on bookstore shelves, but that's about it) and it was the most fun I've had at the movies in ages. I went on the recommendation of someone who also loved it despite also not knowing the source material and not even liking anime much, so I think it probably does pretty well for anyone who wants to go see a cool basketball drama? The review might be falling into the common fandom pitfall of overestimating how much the additional context you spent a long time learning really affects the experience. Like, I'm sure there are little things that passed me by but fans would have gone wild for, but there was never a moment where I felt lost or wasn't having a great time.

I was really impressed with the visuals. They nailed a look that's neither an imitation of 2D animation nor an existing CGI blockbuster style, and I can't imagine the basketball scenes being as good without the camera movement that that made possible.

I wonder if this movie would've either been better suited with a reviewer who is more familiar with the franchise, or with two reviews (one from a fan). As it is, I didn't really get anything out of this review beyond "I don't know the series well so I found this difficult". I would've liked to hear more about other elements. There were brief mentions of them, like the story and animation, but it felt like everything had the caveat of "but as I don't know the series it didn't really work for me".
Most franchise tie in films are for established fans of the series. You don't go into MHA or Fairy Tail or DBZ expecting to be filled in on who everyone is, their backstory, their personality etc (or, at least, you probably shouldn't be going into with that expectation), so it's probably unfair to expect it from this film. It's made for fans of the series. If non fans can enjoy it too, that's a plus, but not the key motivation.

I do agree though that calling it "First Slam Dunk" is an odd move and does imply something it doesn't deliver on.
