So much for all the geniuses on Twitter who said no one would ever watch a "woke" Gundam show.

Witch of Mercury is decent but it's my least favorite stand alone Gundam. I feel the character drama and politics just isn't there. Add to that the constant school life and dueling, I just don't think it measures up despite how well it's doing. It is animated very well, so I can't complain there. Maybe this is because of trying to appeal to a younger generation, I am middle aged so maybe I can't relate enough to it. If the show becomes 4 cour and the WAR starts soon, I may be inclined to like it more.

I don't think the scenario you're describing actually happened. The only complaints I've seen for Witch From Mercury are people who think it's too kiddy r dislike the school focus. i.e. the people who also hated Build Fighters and anything Gundam related that isn't UC which isn't new for the fanbase.

There seems to be a recurring trend of people inventing a person in their head and then getting angry about them. I see far more people complaining about these alleged people complaining about the show than people actually complaining about it.

That's been a thing in the western Gundam fanbase for ages at this point. I blame that "wow cool robot" meme. Some people really made that their entire personality.

Anyway, good for Gundam. Nice to see the trend of it's popularity increasing every year keeping up for about 5 years now. I got back into it myself thanks to Origin and finding a new Gunpla building hobby during the pandemic. Seems a lot of people did going off these numbers.

Oh boy, I have some news for you. While strawmanning definitely exists, "strawman people" exist too, who absolutely blurt out things like that with a straight face. It would be much healthier to just ignore them, but they come in numbers and they're treating it as a shouting match; such is the way of the social media. And thanks to Twitter Blue, now they're louder than ever and they're literally paying for it.

Its continued popularity in arcades throws a wrench into that equation as ever. But, considering they seem to be okay with porting an older version every few years and the last named update before the current one is nearly five years old, surely it wouldn't kill them to give us Extreme Vs 2 with Aerial thrown in.

Are all western fanbases are like this? What part of the West are you referring, not all of people are exactly like that when complaining about changes on an long running franchise like Gundam.

I recall the director/writer/producer(?) mentioning that they wanted to make Gundam easier for others to watch, nailed it!

I like G-Witch since it's something different and new, but it's been a lot less action orientated and more focused on the relationship drama. It's right in the middle between Turn A and 00 in terms of favorite non-UC.

I think there's plenty, if used well. UC is still going even after all these years and I don't think they're going to stop with that anytime soon. Right now spoiler[a new election is happening to elect the new head of the Benerit Group and I think the plot involving that will take the rest of the season to conclude. I see Shaddiq and Peil Technologies as the mid-season villain, I don't think it's Prospera's time yet, if ever. We still need to see more of space politics outside of corporations and what is going out there outside of the academy, both in space and on Earth. As well as past wars and what REALLY led to the Vanadis incident (and what happened after). What are data storms, what's happening at Mercury, etc. should I go on? Not to mention the inevitable timeskip.]

The article seems to only focus on Gundam for some reason but I think it's also noteworthy from Bandai-Namco's reporting that the One Piece franchise doubled in revenue from last year. I'm sure the One Piece card game had a role in that since that thing exploded in popularity.

The first time I myself really got into Gundam was Build Fighters and bought a ton of Fumina merch. Witch From Mercury is basically a Cute Girls Doing Cute Things show but with Gundams so I'm a fan of that. I guess all my favorite Gundams are the very not-Gundam like ones Laughing I never really did care for the stuffy, serious, wartime dramas I saw in the past so new iterations of the franchise always interest me. I do think Build Fighters is better, though.
