Kenta Shinohara is back in animated form with a quirky, cute, and hilarious cast getting into magical misadventures.

Nico thinks she's in a romcom, Moi thinks he's in a serious fantasy anime where he's the perpetual straight man, their teacher is the only qualified person to teach this class as a manga otaku, the colorful class rolls with everything. The OP and ED are stellar. What more could you want?

Also I love how Studio Bibury end up with reference-heavy anime.

Megumi Ishitani is truly an unbelievable director. What an Opening that is.

As a Gintama and Sket Dance fan, I obviously can't resist watching this. I thought the first episode was a bit weak, but I'm starting to warm up to it with its second episode.

I loved SKET Dance back in the day but I was not the biggest fan of Astra and felt Shinohara is much better suited to do more comedic school hijimks so I'm glad to see Witch Watch finally get adapted and have been loving it so far.

Episode 2 is better than 1, unfortunately I feel the character writing its weaker than Sket Dance's.

For now its funny and have no problem with keeping watching, but Sket Dance had an stronger beginning.

I honestly avoid watching anime OPs until I watch the show itself, but when I saw that Ishitani did the OP I had to watch the OP, and yea, it's amazing. It has SO many nods to things that will happen in super subtle ways and it was only on my most recent rewatch that I noticed it shows that a character I didn't think it would show up in this season probably will. Also, it has a YOASOBI song elevating it even more. Just amazing stuff.

This time, we get a version of the opening based entirely on its animation storyboards, with the joke here being that Nico seems to have somehow messed with the animation

It reminded me of Gintama MS Paint opening lmao

One of my favorite things in anime (or heck, in any show, period) is when a show alters its opening/ending for something, whether it's something like a simple gag or something more dramatic like a character's death

So what I'm saying is before I was kinda just watching the show because it popped up at the top of Netflix recommended shows, but now I'm actively looking forward to future episodes (also the smaller/dumber Nicos cracked me up).

The "unfinished" OP courtesy of Nico's magic is so on-brand that I applaud the studio for actually doing it.

Ah yes, trying to look fashionable for you crush. if it's not your amazing legs in PJ's, or him seeing your butt when you only have half an outfit in front, at least he appreciates your vintage smocks.

You split Nico four-ways and at that point the single brain cell she still has left becomes basically nothing...

I love how Nico's mom is another Nana Mizuki MILF and a pretty serious character...but she's also into Golgo 13. Just like Moi is into vintage clothing.

You thought it was a dog-man, but instead it was a tengu! And Nico's other familiar/childhood friend! Could Nico be in a love triangle? That'll sure help her romantic delusions!

That sequence of Nico splitting herself to carry the boxes really annoyed me when I read it in the manga.

Our premise is that each Nico is half the mass/volume of the original, right? Which means is 79% as big as the original in each dimension. And their muscles and bones and everything have 63% of their original cross-sectional area, which means the two Nicos working together *should* be about 26% stronger than the original. Your basic square-cube-law stuff.

Besides, even if they weren’t stronger on net after splitting, they’d still have more stability, with four hands to support a load instead of two.

Thanks for the update on the Crunchyroll subtitles. I ended up switching to Netflix whose subtitles aren’t any easier to read…

with any extra punch to the dub script mostly in the form of more swear words

A Witch Watch with (non-magical) cursing is hard to imagine.

Wow, Kan really is the Joey Wheeler of the show! Just a tengu trying to get respect for his species and do right by his childhood friend...whose mom is helping pay off his debt from in-app purchases. But you just can't hate him and he just has a way of getting along with everybody.

I can respect a girl who has a massive crush on a guy but has no problem with a BL scenario between him and another one of her male childhood friends.

Is there anything more passionately friendly than an arc of arms over shoulders, complete with a dog?

Actually why does Nico's mom seem to know so many apparently single dads with kids who then would go on to protect her daughter?

Evil dress voiced by Ryotaro Okiayu! Nico undone by her own need to loo good in front of Moi!

Two episodes of a row in Nico in her underwear but her nailing that landing in pantyhose is quite the visual.

Something that I noticed last episode but when Nico gets freed from the evil dressand lands in underwear, it didn't feel like fanservice, I don't know how to put it but it felt more genuine, like it had to happen that way. It wasn't overtly sexualised (I'm saying this as someone who loves fanservice and ecchi anime). I think this anime can be considered without fanservice since it wasn't used as a means. So props to Sket Dance's author onmaking something like this

Also this anime is just fun in general

I’m hoping they dedicate an entire episode to URON MIRAGE
