You know, maybe it's time for companies to do more than issue sternly worded message to users.
Google's main source or revenue continues to be advertisements. If Gemini is making fake images with unauthorized branding, which is likely trademarked, and its top search results are now AI summaries of websites, thereby taking away a reason to go to those sites, then maybe they don't need to be advertising on Google? |

I think taking away the money from Alphabet et al for hosting their ad campaign's might hammer it home. AI generated slop summaries often do a disservice to the product that's being sold. Say for instance, a 'normie' was looking for information on a Real Grade Gunpla Model kit and the first thing that they saw was an that AI generated slop summary, doesn't state which timeline the kit is from (Universal Century, After Colony, Cosmic Era, etc.) nor the features of said kit when it's fully assembled or features that don't exist. That would put a 'normie' off from purchasing that kit or get frustrated with Bandai that the kit does not have features that weren't officially covered.

You guys know this isn't actually about AI but using their logo without their permission, right? They'd say the same thing if people posted non-AI mock-ups of figures and used their logo. It's about them not wanting fake stuff confused for actual products especially if it's for licenses they don't have or other legal issues for people thinking they're announcing products for stuff they don't own. They've gone after non-AI fanarts for using their stuff in the past as well.

I'm not sure if ANN is simply unaware of the context behind this statement or choosing to purposely omit it, but this is about a few really gross Gundam "fans" who were posting mock-ups celebrating the Charlie Kirk assassination that happened last week and Bandai were obviously not cool with their stuff being used in that way and were quick to condemn it. This Kotaku article goes into slightly more detail.

In that case I think Bandai is in the right, despite how vile a person Charlie Kirk is. Also a good reason to purposely omit it as these are rather politically charged times that we now live in, one spark from any party can set off a powder keg. P.S. Haven't read Kotaku in a good long time due to multiple ownership changes, some bearable while the more recent ones were rubbish due to the 'listicles' that were mandated by the owners. |
