This is quite an achievement for the film and for the K-pop music genre itself.

I know that wouldn't be a one to one translation to movie theater tickets, but imagine if Sony actually bothered making the movie just by themselves and bringing it to theaters. They literally missed out on hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars (that's not including revenue from other potential sources) because they didn't have faith in it and let Netflix have the property for a measly $20 million.

Who knows if it would've worked out the same way. Some people say it wouldn't because movies in theaters nowadays have to have big opening weekends or they'll be soon forgotten the next week, but with streaming, the buzz could grow steadily instead due to lower barrier of entry

Also, it's not $20 million. Sony and Netflix made a deal in 2020 where Sony would make content for Netflix (since Sony doesn't have its own streaming service), with Netflix paying Sony to do the work. In this case, Netflix paid Sony $100 million for the cost of production, plus $20 million profit for Sony, plus $5 million extra for Netflix to own the rights - thus for a total of $125 million
